ENTERTAINMENT BRIEFS : KARAOKE FINALISTS TO BATTLE AT ALAMO.


NEWBURY PARK - The Coast to Coast Karaoke karaoke

(Japanese; “empty orchestra”)

Use of a device that plays instrumental accompaniments to songs with the vocal tracks removed, permitting the user to sing the lead.
 Challenge '96, presented by Tuneful Productions, culminates Saturday with finalists competing for the local championship.

The final contest will be held at 9 p.m. at the Alamo Alamo

Eighteenth-century mission in San Antonio, Texas, site of a historic siege of a small group of Texans by a Mexican army (1836) during the Texas war for independence from Mexico.

The contest is hosted by Tony and Sherri Mauri. Finalists are competing for cash and one winner will be crowned and advance to the state final July 21 in Riverside. The state winner will advance to the national final in Orlando, Fla.

Theater workshop auditions planned

MOORPARK - Auditions will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today and Monday for places in a summer melodrama melodrama [Gr.,=song-drama], originally a spoken text with musical background, as in Greek drama. The form was popular in the 18th cent., when its composers included Georg Benda, J. J. Rousseau, and W. A. Mozart, among others.  workshop being sponsored by the Magnificent Moorpark Melodrama and Vaudeville vaudeville (vôd`vĭl), originally a light song, derived from the drinking and love songs formerly attributed to Olivier Basselin and called Vau, or Vaux, de Vire.  Co.

Students will learn about character interpretation, blocking, choreography, voice instruction, character costume development, stage makeup application, theater etiquette, ethics and responsibility.

Auditions will take place at the theater, 45 E. High St. Classes are from 9 a.m. to noon or from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning June 19 through July 29. Auditions for a second workshop will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 11.

Players to stage `Steel Magnolias'

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - The Conejo Players will have auditions Sunday through Tuesday for roles in an August production of ``Steel Magnolias.''

Auditions will take place at the Players' theater, 351 S. Moorpark Road, from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday and beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. The Tuesday auditions are only for the role of DJ.

Performers needed for `Greased' roles

MOORPARK - The Magnificent Moorpark Melodrama and Vaudeville Co. will have auditions at 7 p.m. June 24 for 14 roles in its coming production of ``Greased,'' scheduled to run Aug. 16 to Sept. 22.

Performers should come prepared to sing, dance and do a cold reading from the script. Auditions take place at the theater, 45 E. High St.

Ojai historian-artist to talk at museum

VENTURA - Ojai historian and artist George Stuart will speak on ``Traitors'' this month at the Ventura County Museum of History and Art, 100 E. Main St.

Stuart will cover some of history's most famous turncoats, including Benedict Arnold, John Wilkes Booth, Yuan Shih-Kai and Aaron Burr burr (bur) bur.

Civic Light Opera to conduct tryouts

SANTA BARBARA Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  - The Civic Light Opera will have auditions at 7 p.m. June 24 for roles in its coming production of ``Nunsense,'' scheduled to run Aug. 14-25 at the Granada Theatre.
