ENHANCED BASS-FIDDLE PHOTO EVOKES SPIRIT OF COWBOY FESTIVAL.

Byline: Carol Rock Staff Writer

VALENCIA - Slinging a Sharpie in a way that could chill a varmint's soul, artist Ira Gostin signed pictures recently of a colorful bass fiddle propped up against worn wooden shingles shingles: see herpes zoster.

Smiling from beneath his black cowboy hat, the friendly artist was clearly thrilled to have his work selected for this year's Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival.

An advertising photographer by trade, Gostin has been called a ``visual storyteller,'' using photography, image manipulation and computer-enhanced hues to come up with an image that graces the city's campaign for cowboys worldwide to visit the annual event.

Gostin's work, titled ``Desert Rhythm,'' is an enhanced photo of a bass played by Prairie prairie

photojournalist, Gostin has been shooting the festival for the past five years and wanted to take the festival's image in a new direction for its second decade.

``This new look is a little bit of a gamble. I took the picture of the bass into Adobe Photoshop See Photoshop.  to give it the watercolor effects,'' he said, remembering some of the images of past festivals. ``It's fun to see how the city has grown over the years. I remember when it was just Newhall and Saugus, now it's changed so much.''

City officials said the new direction is indicative of the many changes to this year's layout, done to accommodate the filming of the HBO Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)

``We're building a 1,000-seat outdoor amphitheater amphitheater (ăm`fəthē'ətər, ăm`pə–), open structure used for the exhibition of gladiatorial contests, struggles of wild beasts, sham sea battles, and similar spectacles.  for performances, so it's really a better value because there are no individual ticketed events. For the price of admission, you get to see everybody,'' said festival coordinator Phil Lantis. ``If you've never been to the festival, this is the year to go.''

Gostin will be signing posters at the Western Film Panel and Artist Quick Draw event March 25 at the Hyatt Valencia. Posters may be purchased for $10 at the signing and at Melody Ranch.
