ENGLISH SIDE FOR TEAM GB.

AN ENGLAND football team could play as Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics - following an agreement from the other home nations not to block the idea.

A joint letter has been sent to FIFA FIFA International Association Football Federation [French Fédération Internationale de Football Association]

FIFA n abbr (= Fédération Internationale de Football Association) → FIFA f
, which has yet to ratify the proposal, saying Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales would have no involvement.

But it goes on to say they would not prevent England fielding a team.

Scottish FA spokesman Rob Shorthouse admitted: "The English are going to go it alone."

The development should see the end of a dispute that has raged since 2005, when London won the right to host the Games.

However any formal confirmation is not expected until next week at the earliest, and would also need to be signed off by the British Olympic Association The British Olympic Association (BOA) is responsible for the United Kingdom's participation in the Olympic Games. It was formed on 24 May 1905 by the House of Commons. The first chairman of the association was Lord Desborough.  and the International Olympic Committee “IOC” redirects here. FIFA had set a deadline of the end of May for the four home nations to come to an agreement over Olympic representation.

At one stage Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson (above) was being touted as a possible manager for the GB team.

However Tam Ferry, from the No Team GB campaign, said: "Allowing England to play as Team GB sets a dangerous precedent."
