ENGINES TESTED WITH NEW MOBIL LUBRICANT SHOW VIRTUALLY NO WEAR
DETROIT, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB) said today it has developed an advanced synthetic motor oil that in extensive tests virtually eliminated wear on critical parts in new automobile engines, even after 200,000 miles of rigorous and demanding operation.
The high-mileage engines were maintained as recommended by the manufacturer and had regular oil and filter changes. When disassembled after testing, the key engine parts were found to be still well within new-engine specifications.
"The new formulation gives us improvements not only in wear, but also in cleanliness and high-temperature performance that represent a breakthrough of the scale attained by the introduction of synthetic motor oil for automobiles in the mid-Seventies," said William L. Maxwell, of Mobil's Paulsboro, N.J., Research Laboratory, and lead engineer on the reformulation team.
At a press conference here, the company said the new synthetic motor oil, called Advanced Formula Mobil 1, is being introduced to the market this month. It replaces the original formula Mobil 1 the company introduced in 1976.
"On the basis of our tests, we believe performance of the new Mobil 1 is far superior to and provides far more protection than any other oil, either the best of competitive synthetics or conventional motor oils," Maxwell said.
According to Mobil, this new lubricant helped maintain engine exhaust emissions, even after running the equivalent of 15 years' hard driving, within levels specified for new engines by the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the recent Mobil tests, engines lubricated with Advanced Formula Mobil 1 remained clean and virtually free of sludge formation after 200,000 miles of use.
Advances in the new Mobil 1 formula provide increased lubricant stability at the intense temperatures attained by today's more compact auto engines, thus improving engine performance at high speeds. In standardized industry tests, for example, new Mobil 1 is up to four times more stable in hot-running engines than conventional motor oils. Such amplified thermal stability reduces oil consumption and boosts fuel economy.
Advanced Formula Mobil 1 also remains far more fluid than conventional lubricants in frigid temperatures, pouring easily even at 55 degrees below zero. This facilitates cold-weather starting, making cold starts far less abrasive on the engine's major bearing surfaces.
"We're aware that few motorists drive their cars 200,000 miles," said James T. Mann, Mobil's vice president for U.S. Marketing, "but the great advantage in Advanced Formula Mobil 1 is the way it assures car owners that even under the most demanding conditions of extreme cold or hot, high-speed driving, their engines are receiving unparalleled protection. We know of no other motor oil that provides that same degree of security."
New Advanced Formula Mobil 1 is available in three grades, SAE Grades 5W-30 and 10W-30, the two primarily recommended by U.S. car builders, and 15W-50, favored by some drivers of high-performance or imported cars.
