After dousing him with water, Domingo Elizarraraz and some of his teammates hoisted Engilman, Sylmar's longtime coach, on their shoulders and nearly dropped him. It was nothing compared to the heart stopper Engilman endured on the way to his 200th victory. Sylmar squandered squan·der tr.v. squan·dered, squan·der·ing, squan·ders 1. Alan Perez scored the game winner on a 55-yard touchdown reception with 44 seconds left to give Sylmar a 28-21 victory over Monroe on Friday. Engilman lectured players afterward about their sloppy play and inexcusable mistakes. He said, with a smile, that they gave him a few extra gray hairs. ``I'd rather (an easy one) but I'll take the win any way you can get it,'' Engilman said. ``The kids don't give up. Monroe didn't give up either.'' Monroe, down 21-7 in the fourth quarter, tied it on a 20-yard touchdown by Sergio Sicaros with 61 seconds left, capping a 91-yard drive. But Engilman conjured an old play from his playbook, one that's worked for 24 years. Sylmar quarterback Terry Newsome didn't think the play ever would work when he and his teammates practiced it this week. But it worked to perfection Adv. 1. to perfection - in every detail; "the new house suited them to a T" just right, to a T, to the letter . Newsome dropped back and threw a pass to Joseph Higgens, who evaded a defender then threw a pass across his body to a wide-open Perez on the left side. ``We still had a lot of time on the clock,'' Higgens said. ``Anything was possible. We just practiced it this week, but it worked.'' Sylmar (4-2-1, 2-0 Valley Mission League) and Monroe (3-4, 1-1), weathered a three-hour game filled with injuries, penalties and mistakes. But like the other 199 victories, it was worth it for Engilman. ``It's a coaching milestone,'' Engilman said. ``It's a credit to longevity and a credit that I've been successful and that my program works.''
