ENERGY ASSISTANCE AWARENESS WEEK SET

 ENERGY ASSISTANCE AWARENESS WEEK SET
PITTSBURGH, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- An older adult organization,

the three major natural gas companies and Integra Bank will join forces Tuesday, March 3, and Thursday, March 5, for Energy Assistance Awareness Week in an effort to inform low income families and individuals about the availability of funds to help pay heating bills, it was announced today.
Representatives from Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, Equitable Gas Company and The Peoples Natural Gas Company will be at various Integra branches March 3 to encourage people to apply for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds. Income guidelines and applications will be available, along with assistance to complete an application.
Also, representatives from the Older Adult Services & Information System (OASIS) and the three gas companies will be available at area shopping malls March 5 to sign-up applicants for LIHEAP.
The 1991-92 LIHEAP program will conclude April 3, and funds are limited. There is concern that if the 1991-92 funds are not used, LIHEAP funding may be reduced for the 1992-93 program.
LIHEAP helps low income people pay their heating bills through energy assistance grants. The program is funded by federal tax dollars, and is based on household income. Recipients do not have to have an unpaid energy bill to receive assistance. It is not welfare, and no lien is placed on an individual's property.
Most of those who receive LIHEAP funds are older adults, single parents or families with small children. During the 1990-91 program, over 96,000 people in southwestern Pennsylvania received LIHEAP assistance to pay gas bills.
Gas company representatives will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 3 at various Integra Bank branches to accept LIHEAP applications. OASIS and gas companies representatives will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 5 at the Century III, South Hills Village, Allegheny Center and North Way Mall shopping complexes.
