 ENERGEN REGISTERS FOR SALE OF DEBENTURES
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Energen Corporation


(NYSE: EGN) announced today that it has filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the proposed sale of $20 million of debentures, at an undetermined rate of interest, due 2007.
 Net proceeds will be used to repay short-term debt incurred by Energen in connection with its coalbed methane development activities.
 The debentures will be offered by the underwriter, Edward D. Jones & Co., and sold only by means of a prospectus filed with and declared effective by the SEC.
 Energen is a diversified energy company engaged primarily in gas distribution and oil and gas exploration and production.
