A wet week lies ahead for Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . The city's rainy season is expected to begin in earnest today with the first in a series of Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  storms.

More showers should follow through Thursday, forecasters said.

A 20 percent chance of rain is predicted for this morning, increasing to 50 percent by this afternoon, said Stuart Seto, a hydrometeorology hy·dro·me·te·or·ol·o·gy

``We'll be getting periods of rain followed by improvement, then more rain,'' Seto said.

The expected showers will end a six-week dry spell in Los Angeles. The city's last wet day was Sept. 25, when nearly half an inch of moisture fell on the Civic Center downtown.

 seas, swelling to 6 to 10 feet, should accompany the storm today, Seto said.

The showers may mark the beginning of this winter's El Nino weather pattern, expected to dump 1-1/2 to 2 times the normal amount of rain on Southern California.

Normal rainfall for Los Angeles is about 13.6 inches, Seto said. Usually about 2 inches of moisture falls in November. The wettest month is February, with more than 3 inches, Seto said.

Temperatures should peak in the high 60s today and stay cool all week.
