Upon successful completion of the first phase, EMR and Imperial Oil expect to embark upon subsequent testing and development phases aimed at advancing the microwave technology for bitumen recovery. EMR's strategy of long term microwave technology development for bitumen, regarded as a more difficult task than recovery of lighter grades of heavy oil, is made possible through the Imperial Oil agreement. This, together with its more immediate heavy oil demonstration projects, will help to ensure EMR's recognition and participation in heavy oil technology developments.
