The crackdown on the ignored law requiring front license plates was necessitated by the increasing use of controversial automatic cameras to catch red-light crashers at busy intersections, officials said.

and parking control officers now are under orders to cite cars without front plates - a $25 ticket that could be reduced to $10 once the plate is put on - because too many cars caught on camera could not be identified.

On Monday, parking enforcement officers with the city's Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department, found about 20 percent of the vehicles they cited for parking violations had no front license plates, said Jimmy Price, the chief of parking enforcement for the LADOT LADOT Los Angeles Department of Transportation .

About 30 percent of the violators caught on red light cameras don't have front license plates.

Critics say the crackdown represents a blow for personal freedom.

``The cameras are there now. They have to have the license plates. Eight camera systems have been operating in the city this year, including two in the Valley. A system has been operating at Sherman Way and Winnetka Avenue since January. A second camera system has been operating at Laurel Canyon Laurel Canyon can refer to several things:

 and Victory boulevards since June.

Since the beginning of May, Valley police have conducted front license plate stings weekly, writing more than 1,400 tickets to motorists without front plates.

A violator must pay a $25 bail amount for the front plate violation. If the violator corrects the issue, the court can reduce the amount to a $10 administrative fee. If it's not corrected, the violator would be required to pay the full amount and would be subject to subsequent citations until the violation is corrected.

``The person who thinks they can beat the system by paying a $20 administrative fee every now and again when they get caught (is) sadly mistaken,'' Turner said. ``The judge will have a copy of the person's driving record.''
