EMPRISE TECHNOLOGIES ACQUIRES STAND-ALONE NETWARE STORAGE PRODUCT, SIGNS MARKETING AGREEMENT

SOUTH PITTSBURGH TECHNOLOGY PARK, Pa., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Emprise Technologies today announced its acquisition of VExtract for NetWare(TM), the company's first stand-alone NetWare product. VExtract, which Emprise acquired from Pittsburgh-based developer Vortex Systems, Inc., is an NLM (NetWare Loadable Module) server-based storage and recovery utility that enables network administrators to view and extract data from an unmountable NetWare volume.
VExtract offers a complement to NetWare's VRepair utility, providing extensive data recovery capabilities after any abnormal shutdown of a network server's storage system.
"VExtract is a very functional utility. It provides considerable restoration capabilities without draining full system resources, and it does so at a very reasonable price," said Amy Lou, Analyst II with Kerr- McGee Corporation in Oklahoma City. Kerr-McGee has been using the product since its initial release in January 1993.
The product -- available in both single- and multi-server versions -- works on any NetWare server running Novell NetWare 3.x and with any disk type. It also works with mirrored disks.
"This acquisition marks a positive synergy between Vortex and Emprise," said Henry Caplan, chief executive officer of Vortex Systems. "VExtract fits perfectly with Emprise's stated commitment to acquire, develop and market enterprise-wide storage and management products and capabilities."
Commenting on Emprise's strong global distribution and support network, Steve Getz, president of Vortex Systems, said, "Emprise Technologies is uniquely positioned to take full advantage of technology that Vortex has developed for the LAN marketplace. They are acquiring powerful new software products that can be leveraged through their extensive distribution channels."
Emprise will market the single-server version of VExtract through LAN resellers Digitus (in the Pacific Rim) and Westcon (U.S.), and is actively pursuing other VAR, reseller and OEM agreements. The multi- server version will be sold directly to corporate information systems personnel through the company's worldwide distribution channels.
"Emprise is aggressively pursuing new areas beyond the mainframe environment for companies that are `rightsizing' their operations," said Emprise founder Glen Chatfield. "We're committed to providing products and services that will meet these companies' growing systems management needs."
VExtract is just the latest aspect of Emprise's advancing emphasis on systems management and storage products. The company also recently announced a cooperative agreement with Cheyenne Software of Roslyn Heights, N.Y. The technology and marketing agreement combines Emprise's expertise in intersystems management with Cheyenne's Enterprise Access Strategies. Both ventures exemplify Emprise's ongoing commitment to providing enterprise-wide solutions for intersystems management.
Emprise Technologies was founded in 1991 by computer industry veterans Glen Chatfield, Denis Burt, Gregory Coticchia, Alan Himler, Patrick Pagano and Neal Pollon. Chatfield was a founder of Duquesne Systems and the first CEO of its successor, LEGENT Corporation. The other Emprise partners previously played key roles in development and marketing at Duquesne Systems, and later, LEGENT.
