      Explore the sounds and techniques of the acoustic upright bass,
and its use in classical, jazz, and popular music. See and hear the
differences and similarities between the upright bass and its electric
counterpart. Acoustic and electric bassist Chuck Deardorf has recorded
and toured the world with many renowned jazz and popular artists, as
well as performing on dozens of CDs and movie soundtracks.

SIL2K: Improv Games

      Strategic Improv Labs 2000 (SIL2K) is dedicated to the research
and development of improvisation strategies for music. SIL2K uses a
variety of instrumentation and techniques, including but not limited
to traditional acoustic instruments, found-object percussion,
turntable manipulation, experimental vocalization and electronic
gadgetry.

      Ernestine Anderson is one of the legendary jazz vocalists. Years
of singing and living have shaped a vocalist who can make your heart
cry one moment and dance the next. Poignant ballads, sassy swing, and
down-home blues -- Anderson is the master of them all. Jazz singer
Nancy King is a master of vocal improvisation, displaying
"indefatigable scat chops and a remarkably elastic range" (The
Oregonian).

      Brazilian pianist and composer Jovino Santos Neto will present and
demonstrate a variety of rhythms and styles from Brazil, placing them
in historical, cultural and musical contexts. Using sequencers and
rhythm modules, he will invite participants to take part in a journey
to the musical heart of Brazil.

      The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (SRJO) is a big band, founded
in 1995 as the Northwest's first permanent ensemble dedicated to the
accurate and historically observant performance of jazz music's great
works. The SRJO features Seattle's finest jazz musicians, comprising
an ethnically diverse group of both young and veteran performers.

      Trombonist, didgeridoo player, sound gatherer, Guggenheim Fellow
and Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, Stuart
Dempster will discuss, demonstrate, and perform improvisation with
particular attention to the importance of listening. Dempster has
improvised in all manner of circumstances, from jazz and blues to
country and western to ethnic bands to classical avant-garde.

of The Tentacle.

Bill Frisell Trio and Robin Holcomb

8:30 to 11:00 p.m.
      This program will open with Robin Holcomb singing her eclectic
original songs accompanying herself on piano. The Bill Frisell Trio
will join Holcomb on a few of her songs before they exclusively take
the stage. Later, Holcomb will join the trio in the course of their
performance on some of Frisell's arrangements of American folk and
bluegrass tunes.
      A celebrated composer and one of the most sought-after guitar
voices in contemporary music, Bill Frisell explores his latest
compositions (as well as time-honored jazz and folk standards) with
his trio featuring Kenny Wollesen on drums and Tony Scherr on bass.
The diverse backgrounds of all three of these talented musicians
provide a wide-open climate where, musically speaking, anything is
possible.
      Robin Holcomb "has created a new American regionalism, spun from
many threads -- country rock, minimalism, Civil War songs, Baptist
hymns, Appalachian folk tunes -- even the polytonal music of Charles
Ives. The music that results is as elegantly simple as a Shaker quilt,

regular contributor to Down Beat magazine, and founder of the Seattle

Seattle jazz scene, won the Governor's Writer's Award.

Susan Pascal: vibraphonist

      Seattle vibraphonist Susan Pascal is presenting a vibraphone
workshop that will focus on the development of the instrument and
playing techniques. Susan Pascal's jazz quartet performs throughout
the Puget Sound region and her music can be heard on KPLU jazz radio.
