EMOTIONAL STAR GETS MESSAGE FOR CHATSWORTH.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

Tom Meusborn was speaking to his entire team, but there was one member in particular that the Chatsworth High baseball coach hoped was listening.

The player to which the speech was likely directed was Matt Fisher.

Fisher is the Chancellors' fiery sophomore shortstop known for letting his emotions loose on the field. His antics have included yelling into the opposition's dugout while standing on base after a clutch hit, talking back to fans in the stands and spouting spout·ing

``I just get pumped up and you get the blood pumping,'' said the 16-year-old Fisher, who is usually one of the smallest players on the field. ``I get pumped up and it's just something that comes out.

``If you do it and don't back it up, the other team, they're really going to get on you. You have to make sure you can back it up. ``It's been going good lately. When it goes good, you're feeling it.''

Fisher kept his cool Thursday as Chatsworth lost to El Camino Real 5-2.

The Chancellors weren't hoping to silence Fisher completely, though. They realize he is often the spark plug spark plug: see ignition.

``He's got a lot of energy and he brings that passion to the field,'' Meusborn said. ``There's no question his style of play has had a positive impact on our players.''

Chatsworth isn't complaining about Fisher's impact in other areas, either.

``He's done a tremendous job both ways,'' Meusborn said of Fisher, who is in his second year as a varsity starter. ``He takes a lot of pride in his defense, but he's done well offensively, too.''

``It's not like, just because I'm young that I can't be a leader,'' Fisher said. ``At different times we can all lead.''

A recent injury to second baseman Kevin O'Hara caused Chatsworth to shake up its infield, with Fisher being the only one left in his original position. But it hasn't shown in Fisher's play.

``It doesn't affect him,'' Meusborn said. ``He just goes out and plays. He probably doesn't even notice.''
