EMINEM EMINEM M&M (Marshall Mathers; music artist)  was being treated for drug addiction in hospital last night after sensationally cancelling his Slane gig.

The rap star devastated 80,000 Irish fans by announcing on Wednesday that he was quitting next month's concert, complaining of "nervous exhaustion nervous exhaustion 1 Nervous breakdown, see there 2 Neurasthenia, see there ".

But the real reason for him quitting was revealed yesterday - the singer is hooked on sleeping pills.

His record label, Interscope Records, dropped the bombshell that Eminem is in rehab in the US.

A statement from the star's management said: "Marshall Mathers, aka Eminem, is in the hospital under doctor's care.

"He's being treated for dependency on sleep medication."

On Tuesday, the 32- year-old rapper blamed "exhaustion, complicated by other medical issues" for abruptly calling off his upcoming tour.

A publicist at the Universal Music Group label declined to give further details, including information about where and for how long the rap star had been hospitalised.

Rumours have been circulating for the past few weeks that the multi- millionaire is sick of living in the spotlight and is considering ending his singing career.

His hometown newspaper, the Detroit Free Press The Detroit Free Press is the largest daily newspaper in Detroit, Michigan, USA. It is sometimes informally referred to as the "Freep". Some still refer to it locally as "The Friendly" -- a slogan from an ad campaign in the '70s. , reported that the Grammy-winning rapper might retire at the end of his Anger Management tour.

Eminem has denied these suggestions but has admitted wanting to spend more time with his daughter, Haley.

He also wants to concentrate more on producing artists for his Shady Records label.

The rapper's meltdown means Slane will be cancelled for the first time in its 24-year history. Fans, who reacted angrily to the news, have been told they will be refunded the EUR EUR

60 fee.

Slane's owner, Lord Henry Mountcharles, has vowed that the controversial singer will never play at the famous venue.

He said: "This is a great disappointment. I don't think he'll ever get a slot at Slane again."

Meanwhile, 50 Cent has shrugged off Eminem's decision to cancel and vowed to press ahead with his own tour.

The rapper, who was due to support Eminem at Slane next month, is expected to play to a sell out Irish crowd - but it will be in the Point.

A spokeswoman for the organisers said: "He was to play twice next month but Eminem's withdrawal threw a spanner in the works.

"But at least he will perform at his long awaited Point concert, which is selling fast."

Tickets are on sale now.
