EMIG WILL BE BACK TO BATTLE MCGRATH.

Byline: BILL SCHLOTTER Motor Sports

An old rivalry will be renewed this weekend at San Bernardino's Glen Helen Raceway Park.

After a six-week layoff to recover from a back injury, 1997 AMA (Automatic Message Accounting) The recording and reporting of telephone calls within a telephone system. It includes the calling and called parties and start and stop times of the call.  Supercross and Motocross champion Jeff Emig will be on his Kawasaki 250 as the AMA Mazda Truck Motocross Nationals begin a 12-race season. Waiting for Emig will be Team Yamaha's Jeremy McGrath, a nemesis from seasons past who just won his fourth Supercross 250 title in his rival's absence.

Emig, 27 of Riverside, and McGrath, 26, of Canyon Lake, have been competing against one another since both debuted on the circuit in 1989. Emig finished 16th to McGrath's eighth in 125 Supercross - the winter tour - that season. But he was 15th to McGrath's 50th in the summer Motocross series.

Since then, Emig has four season titles and McGrath has eight as each has risen to icon status in the sport. Emig won both titles in the 250 class last season. McGrath won one last month.

Saturday, they start out after another again.

``Jeremy will definitely be Jeff's largest contender out there,'' said AMA communications manager Bill Nordquist.

But he won't be the only one. Ezra Lusk and Kevin Windham will challenge both riders. Lusk, of Bainbridge, Ga., was second in season points to McGrath in Supercross. Windham, of Baton Rouge, La., was fourth.

Top contenders in the 125 class are 1998 Eastern Supercross champ Ricky Carmichael of Havana, Fla., 1998 Western Supercross champ John Dowd of Chicopee, Mass., and Stephane Roncada of France.

Racing begins today with Chaparral AMA Amateur motocross racing. Chaparral action continues Saturday and qualifying heats begin for the nationals. National finals are on Sunday.

Gates open at 6 a.m. each day. Tickets are $30 for the three-day weekend or $20 for Sunday only.

It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  fly-in: Irwindale Speedway developers hope to bring several of the lesser NASCAR racing tours to their under-construction half-mile oval when it is completed sometime early next year.

Manager Ray Wilkings feels the track would be a perfect stop for the Craftsman Truck, Winston West or Feather Light Southwest tours. With that in mind, NASCAR president Bill France Jr. made a stop at the construction site while here last weekend for the Winston Cup California 500 at Fontana.

``He flew in by helicopter Saturday,'' said Irwindale spokesman Doug Stokes. ``He stayed for about a half hour.''

True-blue rainbow warrior: Defending Winston Cup champ Jeff Gordon said that despite his California roots he gets along fine with the drivers.

``We don't look at each other any differently just because one guy wears cowboy boots and maybe somebody else doesn't,'' he said.

``I guess I'm a little different in that I wasn't born wanting to drive a stock car,'' Gordon said. ``I'm a race driver and grew up just wanting to race. I didn't care what kind of car it was.''

Tough road ahead: Palmdale's annual Rim of the World Rally begins today and runs through Saturday on the back roads of the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los . The event is staged by the Sports Car Club of America as the fourth stop on its Michelin PRO Rally Championship.

Rally driving pits two-person crews against one another and the clock. Drivers have to navigate a stretch of backwoods road as fast as possible, with speeds up to 120 mph possible on long straight stretches. Going that fast could be hazardous this season over dirt mountain roads ravaged rav·age
