EMERY WORLDWIDE IS FIRST MAJOR AIR CARGO COMPANY TO LINK
ELECTRONICALLY WITH U.S. CUSTOMS AUTOMATED MANIFEST SYSTEM
PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Emery Worldwide has become the first major U.S. air cargo company to link electronically with the U.S. Customs Services' Automated Manifest System (AMS), enabling Emery to substantially reduce customer waiting time for shipment clearance upon arrival in the U.S.
 W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer of Emery, explained that this direct electronic link is a major advantage for U.S. importers and foreign exporters since it broadens the availability of the U.S. Customs Services automated system.
Emery operates both as an integrated carrier and an air freight forwarder using cargo space on commercial airlines, Curry explained. Therefore, Emery's ability to transmit customs data for shippers and carriers regardless of the airline being used means more shippers are able to benefit from the Customs agency's technology for reducing paperwork.
Emery went on-line with the Customs system in January this year, at New York's JFK International Airport. The company plans to expand its on-line linkage with Customs by the end of this year in Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Seattle, Los Angeles and at its Dayton, Ohio hub, Curry said.
According to Angelo Patrizio, Emery's director, international service support, the company used its existing EMCON worldwide communications network software because it already contained much of the information needed for Customs while providing the necessary interface for formatting and transmitting the data.
After three months of adapting Emery's software systems and another three months testing it with Customs, Emery received certification as a deconsolidator from U.S. Customs in December, a detailed process required by the agency before any user can transmit electronically into its system.
Automated manifest data transmission can begin as early as "wheels up" or anytime while in flight before an aircraft's arrival, greatly facilitating the transfer and release of the goods, Patrizio explained.
After Emery provides the data to customs, an electronic transfer authorization is received from the agency that will allow for immediate transfer of the shipment upon arrival from an air carrier to the Emery warehouse. This speeds shipment availability for the customer.
"As a deconsolidator under the AMS program, Emery transmits this data electronically and expedites the Customs formalities for customers, regardless of the airline being used," Patrizio emphasized.
"This puts Emery in a position to have a shipment at the door waiting for a customer's arrival, rather than waiting for the customer and paperwork to arrive before the carrier can locate and release the goods in the warehouse."
Emery Worldwide is a $1.3 billion air freight company with 245 terminal and service locations in North America and 88 countries. Emery provides professional transportation services to support the expedited traffic and logistics needs of retailing, manufacturing and industrial customers. The Emery network accepts any size commercial heavy freight shipment.
