EMERGENT SOLUTION CUTS FIBER-OPTIC ASSEMBLY TIMES BY 89% BY INTEGRATING NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE.

Emergent Information Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:EITI EITI Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

) recently developed an automated solution for a laser diode A semiconductor-based laser used to generate analog signals or digital pulses for transmission through optical fibers. Both laser diodes and LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are used for this purpose, but the laser diode generates a smaller beam that is easier to couple with the smaller core  manufacturer that cut fiber optic assembly times by 89% using National Instruments National Instruments, or NI (NASDAQ: NATI), is an American company with over 4,000 employees and direct operations in 41 countries founded in 1976 by Dr. James Truchard, Bill Nowlin and Jeff Kodosky.  (Nasdaq:NATI NATI National Association of Teen Institutes

Emergent's Scot Blackford, a senior applications engineer and project manager, said: "Our customer gave us three weeks to develop a solution. Using NI LabVIEW, we had an operable operable /op·er·a·ble/ (op´er-ah-b'l) subject to being operated upon with a reasonable degree of safety; appropriate for surgical removal.

Emergent developed this "virtual" automated data acquisition system within two weeks that reduced fiber pigtail A Fiber Pigtail is a single-fiber cable, usually short length, that has an optical connector on one end and a length of exposed fiber at the other end.

The exposed fiber of the pigtail may be spliced to one fiber of a multifiber trunk, i.e.

"Emergent's rapid prototyping success with NI software and hardware made it easy for Emergent's customer to be up and running quickly and save time in assembly," said Guy Nunnellee, NI regional manager.

Emergent prides itself in adding customer value by being able to quickly identify needed functionalities and then develop solutions that combine their software and hardware expertise with industry-standard tools, such as NI LabVIEW.

"Having just attended the Photonics West trade show for manufacturers and users of fiber-optic components and equipment, we saw strong interest in this type of solution and our expertise in process automation," said Bill Raskob, Emergent director of test and measurement.
