EMC Keeps the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway on Track Through Major Online Data Migration.

EMC Corporation announced today that The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF), the second largest railroad in North America, has used EMC's Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS) software to migrate two terabytes of critical business data from previous mainframe storage systems to EMC's high-performance Symmetrix 5000 Enterprise Storage systems. The migration -- which was executed while all of BNSF's applications were online and fully operational -- resulted in increased performance and enhanced system reliability mandated by the consolidation of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroads into one company.

One terabyte of information (one trillion bytes) is the equivalent of 250 million pages of text.

The entire migration was performed in ten hours. "Without SDMS, it would have taken us a year to move a quarter of the data and involved huge labor costs and multiple disruptive system outages," explained Stacey Carpenter, BNSF's Senior System Analyst.

"We did our homework on this one, and EMC stepped up to meet all of our requirements. It was remarkable how smoothly and seamlessly everything worked with SDMS, particularly when you consider how painful our previous experiences with data migration had been," said Pete Backer, BNSF's Technical Consultant. "SDMS enabled us to maintain peak performance and continuous data access throughout the entire migration."

In preparation for the migration, the Fort Worth, Tex.-based railroad purchased two terabytes of EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems to replace existing storage devices. Now that the migration is completed, eighty percent -- 4.1 terabytes or the equivalent of one billion of pages of text -- of BNSF's mainframe storage runs on nine EMC Symmetrix systems. The storage environment supports IBM ES 9000 mainframe computers with DB2 relational database software running a range of mission-critical applications, including the Transportation Support System, which coordinates and controls all of BNSF's trains, crews, and billing.
