EMC Intelligent Storage bolsters leading business publisher's move to open systems; CCH brings together competitive benefits of open systems and mainframe worlds with deployment of powerful Symmetrix 3500 Storage Systems.

CCH will use three Symmetrix 3500 systems to provide intelligent, high-performance data storage to Hewlett-Packard and Sun servers running Oracle, Informix, and Adabase relational databases. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  RS/6000 servers running IBM's DB2/6000 relational database software. Both CCH businesses are using the open systems platforms to run all their major internal and external operations, supporting such applications as online publication databases, accounting, order management, and customer databases.

Intelligent Storage For Competitive Advantage

CCH, headquartered in Riverwoods, Ill., is nearing completion of a major re-engineering strategy to evolve from a publisher of printed reference materials to a provider of information through a variety of formats. Today, CCH delivers business information and services in the form of software programs, CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

"An urgent need to deliver more services more quickly to our clients has been the force driving us to go from a mainframe shop to a total open systems, client/server environment A networking environment that is made up of clients and servers running applications designed for client/server architecture. "Although open systems greatly improves our flexibility, we also have found it does not provide the high performance and reliability we were accustomed to in the mainframe world. With EMC's Symmetrix, we enjoy the benefits of open systems, while maintaining the mainframe-class system availability and power we need to be competitive."

CCH chose EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies.  after evaluating competing storage systems. "Although we have only just started to deploy Symmetrix into our environment, we already have noticed significant performance improvements," added Dubnick. "For example, it used to take three hours to create a file system. With Symmetrix, we did the job in 52 minutes." Strategic Storage For CCH Legal Information Services

CCH Legal Information Services chose EMC Symmetrix over storage solutions from several competitors.

"EMC is the only vendor that addresses storage as a mission-critical strategic solution," said Matthew J. D'Errico, Director of Strategic Technology and Architecture for CCH Legal Information Services. "Other vendors treat storage as a tactical place to put data. EMC's unique point of view allowed us to use storage in ways that have significantly improved our competitive position."

D'Errico credits EMC with providing twice the system performance, allowing the CCH unit to deliver information more quickly to its customers. Also, EMC Symmetrix's disk mirroring, remote maintenance, automatic recovery and ability to connect to multiple systems have dramatically improved system availability, creating what D'Errico described as a "zero downtime environment."

"EMC's commitment to the customer is something I've yet to see from other vendors," added D'Errico. "Their attitude of whatever it takes to make the customer happy is extremely refreshing in today's environment."

"CCH's bold and successful move into open systems is affirmation of our strategy for the Symmetrix 3000 family," said Neil Waddington, Senior Vice President and General Manager of EMC's Open Storage Group. "We developed the Symmetrix 3000 in response to customers who were clamoring for mainframe-levels of performance and availability in the open systems world. The Symmetrix 3000 is the only solution that brings together the competitive advantages of open systems and mainframes onto one storage platform."
