EMC INCREASES PERFORMANCE, FLEXIBILITY OF HARMONIX DISK STORAGE SYSTEM FOR MIDRANGE MARKET.

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1995-- EMC Corporation EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) is an American Fortune 500 and S&P 500 manufacturer of software and systems for information management and storage. It is headquartered in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, USA. , a world leader in storage and retrieval technology, today unveiled its most powerful and flexible Harmonix Integrated Cached Disk Array (ICDA ICDA

) data storage subsystem for the midrange computing market.

EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies.  is now shipping its highly successful Harmonix HX3SR RAID storage subsystem with new 2- and 4-gigabyte (7200 RPM) drives for significant performance improvements and has introduced new microcode A set of elementary instructions in a complex instruction set computer (CISC). The microcode resides in a separate high-speed memory and functions as a translation layer between the machine instructions and the circuit level of the computer.  to enhance the system's overall performance.

"We benchmarked the HX3SR with 2-gigabyte drives versus competing drives and found EMC's to be much faster," said Tom Yale, Project Manager for Technical Services at Oxford Industries, an Atlanta-based apparel manufacturer. "Previously, we were getting 21 millisecond One thousandth of a second. See space/time and ohnosecond.

(unit) millisecond - (ms) One thousandth of a second, one thousand microseconds. A long time for a modern computer.
response times -- with Harmonix, we're now getting response times of four to six milliseconds." Yale added that high performance and high reliability are critical since Oxford Industries plans to use the HX3SR to store and process core financial information, including payroll for 8,000 employees, accounts payable and the general ledger General Ledger

A company's accounting records. This formal ledger contains all the financial accounts and statements of a business.

Notes:
The ledger uses two columns: one records debits, the other has offsetting credits.
. According to industry analysts, approximately 50 percent of all midrange computing environments either have invested in UNIX UNIX

platforms or plan to in the next year. Through a SCSI interface, the Harmonix subsystems provide connectivity to a single IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  RS6000, Sun SparcStation, HP9000 or AS/400. This protects a customer's investment in Harmonix by providing a migration path from the AS/400 to open platforms.

The consumer healthcare division of Pittsburgh-based SmithKline Beecham has seen dramatic improvements in the performance of a key database running on an IBM RS6000 since attaching EMC's Harmonix HX3SR. "We need reports from this database to run our business, including the status of shipments of various healthcare products," said Bob Bordo, Manager of Technical Services. "We're seeing 50 to 60 percent in performance improvements. The time it takes to process one particular project went from 15 hours to four."

"Many customers are evaluating their IS strategies and they are demanding storage solutions that give them performance as well as flexibility," said David DiMartinis, director of midrange products at EMC. "This new move demonstrates EMC's commitment to this market and our responsiveness to our customers' computing challenges."

Since its introduction in 1992, more than 12,000 EMC Harmonix subsystems have been shipped. With 4 megabytes of write cache (expandable to 28 megabytes) and 16 megabytes of read cache (expandable to 448 megabytes) the Harmonix HX3SR continues to be one of the best-selling, highest-performing storage systems in the midrange market.

The Harmonix is another example of EMC's MOSAIC:2000 architectural approach of incorporating leading-edge components and technologies into existing EMC product lines. This "pay as you grow" strategy protects customer investment, allows users to incrementally invest in capacity and performance levels at each stage of growth, and ensures EMC's position as time-to-market leader.

EMC Corporation is a Fortune 500 company and a leader in enterprise-wide information storage and retrieval information storage and retrieval, the systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amounts of  technology, designing systems for mainframe, midrange and open systems computing environments.
