of General Motors and one of the world's largest financial services companies, is implementing an E-Infostructure with EMC Enterprise Storage systems and software to significantly improve sharing of business-critical information across a growing and increasingly complex IT environment. Through the implementation, GMAC expects to dramatically improve user productivity, more adequately protect its information resources (1) The data and information assets of an organization, department or unit. , and reduce data management costs.

"Information is the foundation of our business, there's nothing more important," explained James Yohn, Director, Information Systems and Service Operations at GMAC. "Yet, as the volume of mission-critical data grows and our computing environment becomes more diverse, it has become increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain and share data with other applications and systems. Consolidating our data onto EMC Enterprise Storage has dramatically improved the speed and efficiency in which we access, share, and distribute information throughout the enterprise."

GMAC is implementing EMC InfoMover data-movement software coupled with EMC Symmetrix The Symmetrix is EMC's flagship enterprise storage array. There have been seven generations of Symmetrix hardware, with the first appearing in 1994 and the latest introduced in 2006.  Enterprise Storage systems to facilitate information transfer among IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  and Hitachi mainframes and Hewlett-Packard UNIX servers running financial reporting and financial database systems. InfoMover transfers bulk files directly between host systems via the Symmetrix system rather than over the network, freeing up valuable network resources.

"InfoMover will significantly increase the access to and availability of financial information and improve user productivity throughout our enterprise," noted Yohn. "The combination of InfoMover and data consolidation onto EMC Enterprise Storage will reduce data management costs by streamlining information access and management."

Yohn also noted that the performance benefits of EMC Enterprise Storage is also contributing to more rapid information flow. "When we connected the Symmetrix system to an HP server, for example, the performance went through the roof. Throughput increased several times over -- providing our employees with much quicker access to the information they need to do their jobs."

GMAC also is using EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF SRDF Symmetrix Remote Data Facility

) software to generate mirrored copies of critical data as a core component of its business continuity strategy. EMC SRDF software creates real-time mirrored volumes of production site information at the same or physically separate sites. GMAC also plans to implement EMC TimeFinder software to optimize availability by creating real-time mirrored backup copies of active production volumes in background mode without disrupting operations.

Bob Dutkowsky, EMC's Executive Vice President of Markets and Channels, said, "GMAC Financial Services, the leader in a highly competitive, transaction-orientated market, has created a flexible infrastructure that can expand rapidly to meet fast-changing requirements. GMAC is keenly aware that their ability to integrate information across the enterprise is a cornerstone to continued success. With EMC Enterprise Storage, GMAC can build its business around information -- regardless of the form it takes, where it originates, the applications it runs, or which servers they use."
