:EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. ), Hopkinton, Mass., a world leader in information storage and management, has further expanded the leading capabilities of EMC Centera content addressed storage A storage technique from EMC for content that is in its final form (fixed content). CAS assigns an identifier to the files so they can be accessed no matter where they are located.  (CAS) with new functionality that allows customers to securely archive virtually any data type from any application running on any open platform. The expanded versatility of Centera makes it the most open and easy-to-deploy enterprise archive solution, setting a new standard for information archiving.

Through a new version of Centera Universal Access software and Centera's open application programming interface (API), customers can archive data from open systems and mainframe applications that are integrated to the API, or from applications running on Windows, Unix or Linux environments that use industry-standard protocols.

The new Centera Universal Access Version 2.1 now natively provides support for all four of the major industry-standard protocols:

-- Network File System (NFS) including IBM iSeries via Integrated File System (IFS) using NFS

-- Common Internet File System (protocol) Common Internet File System - (CIFS) An Internet file system protocol, based on Microsoft's SMB. Microsoft has given CIFS to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) as an Internet Draft. CIFS is intended to complement existing protocols such as HTTP, FTP, and NFS.  (CIFS)

-- File Transfer Protocol A communications protocol used to transmit files without loss of data. A file transfer protocol can handle all types of files including binary files and ASCII text files. See Kermit, Zmodem and FTP.  (FTP)

-- Hypertext Transfer Protocol See HTTP.

(protocol) Hypertext Transfer Protocol - (HTTP) The client-server TCP/IP protocol used on the World-Wide Web for the exchange of HTML documents. It conventionally uses port 80.

Latest version: HTTP 1.1, defined in RFC 2068, as of May 1997.

)

Centera is also able to archive data from mainframe applications not- integrated to the Centera API through Bus-Tech, Inc.'s Mainframe Appliance for Storage (MAS) for Centera, which provides access to Centera via Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas. ) or Fibre Connection (FICON (FIber CONnector) An IBM mainframe channel introduced with its G5 servers in 1998. Based on the Fibre Channel standard, it boosts the transfer rate of ESCON's half-duplex 17MB/sec to a full-duplex 100MB/sec. ) connections. With the release of Centera Universal Access V2.1 and new FICON support by Bus-Tech MAS for Centera, customers with any combination of applications and platforms can use Centera as an enterprise archive and unlock the maximum value of their fixed content.
