EMC Delivers Major Enterprise Storage Network Management Software and New Fibre Channel Network Connectivity.

HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 1998--EMC Corporation today took the next step in helping customers consolidate data from the broadest range of heterogeneous systems across an EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies.  Enterprise Storage Network (ESN (Electronic Serial Number) A unique identification number built into a cellphone for security purposes. ). The company announced advanced software for managing and securing enterprise storage network data access, Fibre Channel hub connectivity among Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  servers and EMC Symmetrix The Symmetrix is EMC's flagship enterprise storage array. There have been seven generations of Symmetrix hardware, with the first appearing in 1994 and the latest introduced in 2006.  Enterprise Storage systems, and several additional options for direct server-to-storage Fibre Channel connectivity.

Today's announcement strengthens EMC's lead in helping customers build the infrastructure required for large-scale enterprise storage networks. Through EMC Enterprise Storage Networks, organizations with heterogeneous computing environments can virtually extend the walls of their data centers and consolidate information from more servers across greater distances. EMC Enterprise Storage Networks will speed consolidation efforts; provide a fast, reliable infrastructure for the common management, protection and sharing of data across the enterprise; relieve network bottlenecks; and offer new dimensions in cost savings.

Managing Complexities of Shared Data Access

The exponential complexity of connecting up to hundreds of servers to shared storage resources requires highly specialized data control. To that end, EMC announced Volume Logix configuration management software. Residing on an EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system, Volume Logix ensures secure disk access in a shared storage environment, enabling storage administrators to control access to specific volumes for each server on the storage network.

"Ensuring secure access for multiple servers on the enterprise storage network is a non-negotiable requirement. The issue is particularly important with Windows NT systems, as each server is `trained' to treat any connected storage as its private domain," said Jim Rothnie, EMC's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Technical Officer. "EMC is the only company to deliver an effective solution to this critical problem. Volume Logix is Exhibit A of how EMC is helping customers build enterprise storage networks to address strategic information requirements The information needed to support a business or other activity. Systems analysts turn information requirements (the what and when) into functional specifications (the how) of an information system.  across the entire business."

EMC also announced Fibre Channel hub connectivity for Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Dell and Siemens AG Siemens AG

German electrical-equipment manufacturer. The first Siemens company, Siemens & Halske, was founded in Berlin in 1847 to build telegraph installations.
Windows NT servers. This permits multiple servers to be connected to a single Symmetrix port, substantially increasing the number of servers that can be supported by a single Symmetrix system. In addition, EMC has announced Fibre Channel hub connectivity for Windows NT clusters using Hewlett-Packard, Compaq, Dell, and NCR (NCR Corporation, Dayton, OH, www.ncr.com) A technology company specializing in financial terminal transactions, retail systems and data warehousing. Until the late 1990s, NCR was heavily invested in the hardware side of the industry, known worldwide as a major manufacturer of computers  servers. These announcements further EMC's lead as the world's only storage provider able to consolidate, manage and protect information from heterogeneous systems simultaneously across an enterprise storage network. EMC also added direct Fibre Channel connectivity for Symmetrix systems to the Unisys ClearPath family and Groupe Bull Groupe Bull (also known as Bull Computer or simply Bull) is a French computer company based in Les Clayes-sous-Bois, outside Paris. The company has also been known at various times as Bull General Electric, Honeywell Bull, CII Honeywell Bull  Escala UNIX servers.

"To maintain and expand our market position, we must have a comprehensive view of our operational and business information," said John Hanaberry, Chief Information Officer of Brown and Williamson. "To take advantage of this data, we are currently consolidating our MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) Introduced in 1974, the primary operating system used with IBM mainframes (the others are VM and DOS/VSE). MVS is a batch processing-oriented operating system that manages large amounts of memory and disk space. , Novell, Windows NT and UNIX-based information onto EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage. EMC's Fibre Channel and hub connectivity will further extend the reach of that centrally managed storage backbone to distributed Windows NT servers. By providing this level of connectivity, scalability and flexibility, EMC is enabling B&W to pull greater business value from our information and increase our operational efficiencies."

"EMC is taking another crucial step in delivering on its Enterprise Storage Network strategy," said Perry Harris, Director, Management Strategies Research and Development, at Boston-based Yankee Group (the Yankee Group, Boston, MA, www.yankeegroup.com) A major market research, analysis and consulting firm founded in 1970 by Howard Anderson. It provides general consulting and strategic planning in the computer and communications field. . "With the addition of Volume Logix software, Fibre Channel hub connectivity for Windows NT servers, and additional direct UNIX UNIX

Fibre Channel connections, EMC has significantly enhanced its open, standards-based data consolidation capabilities. As Fibre Channel becomes the preferred storage-to-server interconnect, EMC is building a large installed base for the development of comprehensive, highly reliable enterprise storage network solutions."

"EMC has been delivering customers a storage network inside the data center for close to a decade," said Michael C. "With EMC Enterprise Storage Networks, we are extending our heterogeneous connectivity and advanced software functionality to more servers across greater distances. EMC Enterprise Storage Networks enable more and more data distributed across the enterprise to be centrally protected, managed and shared."

In addition to the new connectivity announced today, EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems also provide direct Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel hub connectivity for Hewlett-Packard and Sun UNIX servers as well as direct Fibre Channel connectivity for the following Windows NT servers: IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Netfinity, Compaq, Dell 6100/6300, Hewlett-Packard, NCR, and Siemens Primergy. Last week, EMC added Fibre Channel connectivity for Symmetrix systems to Sequent's next-generation switched NUMA-Q 2000 UNIX servers.

Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems remain the only single integrated storage systems to provide simultaneous support for multiple Fibre Channel and other connectivity options, including Fast-Wide Differential SCSI See SCSI. , Ultra SCSI The designation for various high-speed SCSI interfaces. The original specification was Ultra SCSI, followed by Ultra2, Ultra3, etc. For details, see SCSI.  and mainframe ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type.
