EMC Delivers Information Lifecycle Management for Network Attached Storage.

HOPKINTON, Mass. -- New EMC Celerra FileMover Delivers Policy-Based File Movement; New Open API Allows for Easy ISV Integration, More Customer Choice

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, today announced new functionality for its EMC Celerra family of network attached storage (NAS), further expanding the world's broadest NAS product offering.

With the new EMC Celerra FileMover, EMC can provide customers a hardware and software offering that can easily and automatically move file-based information between primary and secondary storage resources according to policies set by the customer. Celerra FileMover enables the benefits of information lifecycle management (ILM) by helping customers optimize the placement of files within their existing tiered storage infrastructure. A standard capability on all new EMC Celerra NAS systems, Celerra FileMover provides customers with an open technology that can integrate with EMC software, as well as software from other companies.

Celerra FileMover lets customers choose which tiered storage platforms best meet their business or application requirements. For example, EMC Centera, as a Celerra FileMover target, can assist with customers' compliance and active enterprise archive requirements. EMC CLARiiON or EMC Celerra with ATA, as a Celerra FileMover target, can address a customer's lower cost requirements as well as provide a platform for disk-based backup and recovery. Celerra FileMover also supports tape for low-cost, long-term storage. Customers decide which secondary storage best fits their technical and business requirements, and Celerra FileMover performs the transparent file movement.

EMC Legato DiskXtender for Celerra software is now fully integrated with the Celerra FileMover through use of the Celerra application programming interface (API), and automates file movement between Celerra and tiered storage based upon user-defined policies. As a result, customers can lower storage costs, shorten backup and recovery time, reduce administrative overhead and enforce sophisticated record retention policies in conjunction with EMC Centera.

Celerra FileMover functionality is made possible through the new, open Celerra API that enables software vendors with policy/migration software to tightly integrate into a Celerra environment. The API is available today to EMC Developers Program partners.

The current list of integrated third-party software providers includes Arkivio with its AUTO-STOR software, Enigma Data Systems and its StartMove product, and VERITAS Software Corporation with its Data Lifecycle Manager product. EMC expects other independent software companies to integrate with this open API, enabling even more customer choice.

To help customers with the planning, implementation, and integration of the solution, EMC is announcing a new Celerra FileMover Program Management Service. This new service provides comprehensive project management for the individual components of a Celerra FileMover solution, including the partner-implemented policy/migration software.
