EMBATTLED ENRON.A broken pipeline that gushed 10,000 barrels of oil into the Desaguadero Desaguadero (dāsägwäthā`rō), river, c.200 mi (320 km) long, flowing SE from Lake Titicaca to Lake Poopó, W Bolivia. It is used for irrigation in its northern course. Its flow diminishes toward the south and its banks become less densely populated. River has turned into yet another headache for Enron. Although energy transport company Transredes rushed to clean up the spill, Bolivia's Ministry of Sustainable Development is threatening penalties against Enron, which partners with Anglo-Dutch oil firm Shell to run Transredes, and local indigenous groups want compensation for damages. Last year, environmental groups in Bolivia slammed Enron on grounds it failed to meet environmental and labor standards required as conditions for U.S. government loans. |
