ELLIOT F. GERSON NAMED TO HEAD TRAVELERS MANAGED CARE AND EMPLOYEE BENEFITS OPERATIONS; ROBERT E. EVANS NAMED SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT

HARTFORD, Conn., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Travelers Corporation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward H. Budd today named Elliot F. Gerson president of the company's Managed Care and Employee Benefits Operations. The appointment is effective immediately.
Gerson, 40, succeeds Joseph T. Brophy who earlier this year announced his intention to retire March 31. Gerson headed the company's Financial Services Department as a senior vice president for three years prior to being named to his new post. He continues to report to Travelers President and Chief Operating Officer Richard H. Booth.
In a related action, Budd named Robert E. Evans, 38, a senior vice president and head of the Financial Services Department. Evans will report to Travelers Vice Chairman and Chief Investment Officer Robert W. Crispin. Previously, Evans was vice president for the Product Management Division in the Financial Services Department.
"Elliot Gerson is an individual with outstanding experience in the business would as well as in government service," Budd said. "Elliot led a successful turnaround of our individual life, health and annuities operation, getting that business growing again and improving its profitability. It all was accomplished during one of the most challenging times in the life insurance industry."
During the last three months, Booth has been leading a strategic and operational assessment of MCEBO. The work will provide the foundation to improve MCEBO's performance.
"Elliot Gerson and I are committed to profitably growing our employee benefits and managed care business," Booth said. "Elliot will build on MCEBO's solid foundation and its commitment to deliver innovative products and quality service in an increasingly dynamic marketplace.
"In addition, Elliot's government and legal background, with health policy experience, will prove invaluable in the debate on health care reform," Booth said. "It is vital for the insurance industry to make its voice heard on ways that the current system can be improved to serve the needs of the American people."
In commenting on Evans' appointment, Crispin said, "Bob Evans was instrumental in Financial Services' turnaround and will ensure the continuation of that momentum. Financial Services will now operate as part of Investment Operations. This move further strengthens the partnership between investments and financial services product lines." All of the company's asset-gathering businesses are now together under Crispin and include Financial Services, Asset Management and Pension Services, The Copeland Companies and Investments.
