ELIAS BROTHERS RESTAURANTS LISTS HEALTH FACTS ON MENU; RESTAURANT CHAIN ALREADY ADHERES TO PROPOSED FDA REQUIREMENTS
WARREN, Mich., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Elias Brothers Big Boy Restaurants is way ahead of proposed Food and Drug Administration demands on restaurants to support health food and nutritional claims. The international restaurant chain already lists nutritional information for every item on its "Health Smart" menu. According to Tony Michaels, vice president of marketing for Elias Brothers Big Boy Restaurants, Inc., Elias Brothers has listed nutritional information since it began offering a health-conscious menu nine years ago. "We want our consumers to be informed," explained Michaels. "If we are going to make a claim that certain menu items are healthy, we are going to back it up. We want our customers to know that certain menu items will fit into their diets or special health needs." Elias Brothers offers a complete "Health Smart" menu that is endorsed by the William Beaumont Hospital Nutritional Health Program. The menu includes dinners, sandwiches and desserts. A chart lists protein, carbohydrate, fat, calorie, sodium and cholesterol levels for each item. An FDA official recently said the agency may require restaurants to support health claims advertised on menus. Restaurants could meet the requirements by showing state inspectors that their recipes meet the health claims. However, restaurants would not be required to include boxes spelling out nutritional contents of entrees. "We already provide more information than the FDA would require," said Michaels. Based in Warren, Elias Brothers Restaurants is one of the largest restaurant systems in the world and the exclusive worldwide franchisor of the 925 Big Boy restaurants in the United States, Canada and Japan. -0- 6/10/93 /CONTACT: Tony Michaels of Elias Brothers Restaurants, 313-755-8124/
