ELCOR ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW ASPHALT ROOFING PLANT IN CALIFORNIA

DALLAS, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Elcor (NYSE: ELK) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Elk Corporation, plans to construct a new asphalt roofing shingle manufacturing plant in California to better serve its markets in the western United States. The new plant should increase present capacity to produce Elk Prestique(R) premium laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles by about 65 percent. Production of asphalt shingles at the new plant is expected during the latter part of calendar year 1994.
The new plant will also be capable of manufacturing other types of asphalt roofing shingles. In addition, the new plant will take advantage of advanced automation and process control systems to assure its position as the low-cost manufacturing plant in the western United States.
Products produced at the new plant will primarily be sold in California and other western states. Several sites for location of the plant are presently being considered in the final stages of the site selection process.
Customers in the western states are presently being served by the Elk plant located at Ennis, Texas. When the new plant begins serving those customers, Elk's Ennis plant will be able to better serve the rapidly growing demand of its customers in the southwestern and midwestern states.
Total industry shipments of premium laminated shingles in calendar year 1992 were up 55 percent from the prior year and had previously been growing at a compound annual rate of 15 percent per year. The new plant will provide Elk with additional capacity to keep pace with the substantial increase in market demand.
Elcor said that it expects to finance the plant's estimated cost of $30 million from internally generated funds and proceeds from other financing options, which the company is currently exploring.
