El Camino's win marks the third consecutive year the campus has captured the local title. The school's win also is remarkable because it was in third place behind Los Angeles and Marshall high schools after half the Super Quiz results were announced Saturday. Final standings in the Super Quiz show that Los Angeles High placed first, followed by El Camino and Marshall. But El Camino came from behind by placing first in seven of the remaining nine events, wracking up 50,099 points out of a possible 60,000. The rigorous 10-part exam includes math, science and art, as well an interview, speeches and an essay. Garfield scored 45,047 points, while Belmont scored 44,973 points. Each nine-member team comprises three groups of students, divided by grade-point averages of A, B and C. El Camino junior Fu led all A students, followed by teammate Steve Chae, who garnered 8,908 points. In the B student category, El Camino senior Adi Zarchi placed first with 8,775 points followed by teammates Bruce Ngo, with 8,238 points, and Michael Beatty, with 8,079 points. Last week, Moorpark High School won Ventura County's Academic Decathlon.
