``They deserved it,'' Jones said. ``... It's been an honor competing with them. We never compete against them; we compete with them.''

El Camino co-coach Christian Cerone said he was in ``pure shock.''

``We had no idea,'' said Cerone, as he stood with co-coach Lissa Gregorio. ``(California) has the top five teams in the nation based on these scores. It's a shame all of these teams can't be recognized. To be the one team out of this amazing field. ...''

LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  schools have won seven out of California's 11 national championships, making it the school district with the most national titles in the nation.

Dave Schaffer, 55, of Woodland Hills, father of Taft student Dean Schaffer, said the LAUSD's performance was a victory for public schools.

``Everybody bad-mouths public schools and says you can't get a good education,'' Schaffer said. ``I'd like to see the private schools compete at this level and take a team to nationals. The best education in the country is in the LAUSD system.''

Teams from California and Texas have traditionally dominated the national competition, each winning 11 out of the 23 competitions. The only other state to win the national title was Wisconsin in 2002.

Decathlon teams are generally made up of nine students, although schools can compete with as few as six, and last year's national champions, El Camino Real, competed with eight.

On a nine-member team, three are ``A'' students, with grade-point averages between 3.75 and 4.0; three are ``B'' students, with GPAs between 3.00 and 3.74, and three are ``C'' students, with GPAs between 0 and 2.99.
