Fourth-ranked Birmingham High watched its lead in the Northwest Valley Conference boys' soccer race evaporate Wednesday.

Host El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 upset the previously undefeated Braves 1-0, thanks to a rugged style and a goal in the 57th minute by Jose Rivera-Otero, his 11th of the season.

It was just the third goal allowed this season by the Braves.

Birmingham (10-1, 4-1) had numerous chances to tie the score after Rivera-Otero headed home an Ian Cogan throw-in. The Conquistadores (4-1) held off all threats despite being down a man after Mike Petchenick was red-carded with eight minutes remaining.

Another day at the office: The El Camino Real girls' basketball team started Northwest Valley Conference play like it ended the preseason - with another victory.

Take it to the bank: Sophomore guard Kathleen Mallon's 18-foot bank with 10 seconds remaining sent the game into overtime, where 10th-ranked Grant survived a 45-43 scare over host Sylmar in a Valley Pac-8 conference girls' basketball opener.

Rocky Steryo led the Mounties (15-3) to their ninth straight victory with a 22-point effort that included 10 points during a pivotal 19-2 fourth-quarter run.

That burst overcame an earlier second-half streak by the visiting Huskies (8-2), who scored 24 of the first 32 points after halftime to build a 39-34 lead. Sophomore B.J. Hart led Rolling Hills Prep with 20 points, hitting 16 during the Huskies' second-half charge.

Kevin Bentley contributed 12 rebounds for Montclair Prep, which moved within one victory of clinching a postseason playoff berth.

Up and at 'em: Bell-Jeff 6-foot-5-1/2 senior center Mike West and Oflangi Mailangi, a 5-8 sophomore center for the Birmingham girls' basketball team, turned in two of the top rebounding efforts of the season in nonleague wins.

West included a season-high 26 rebounds with his 30 points in an 81-48 Santa Fe Leauve victory over visiting St. Genevieve, while Mailangi pulled down a career-high 25 rebounds in a Northwest Valley Conference-opening 54-34 win at Chatsworth.
