EIS is subject of two-part FSCT Virtual Learning Conference. The FSCT FSCT Federation of Societies for Coating Technology FSCT Fire Support Control Terminal will host a two-part Virtual Learning Conference focusing on Electrochemical electrochemical /elec·tro·chem·i·cal/ (-kem´i-k'l) pertaining to interaction or interconversion of chemical and electrical energies. e·lec·tro·chem·i·cal adj. Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS (1) (Executive Information System) An information system that consolidates and summarizes ongoing transactions within the organization. It provides top management with all the information it requires at all times from internal and external sources. ). "Part I: Fundamentals of EIS" will be held on Thursday, May 11 and "Part II: Evaluation of Coatings with EIS" will be offered on May 25. Instructors for the courses are Dr. Pete Peterson
Douglas Brian "Pete" Peterson and Dr. Bob Rodgers, of Gamry Instruments, Inc. Part I: Fundamentals of EIS Thursday, May 11, 2006 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (ET) Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is a general-purpose electrochemical technique applicable to virtually all areas of electrochemistry electrochemistry, science dealing with the relationship between electricity and chemical changes. Of principal interest are the reactions that take place between electrodes and the electrolytes in electric and electrolytic cells (see electrolysis), as well as the . This initial session discusses the basics of electrochemistry and EIS. Data acquisition (instrumentation and cells) and data analysis are addressed in detail. The concept of interpreting the data with equivalent circuits is explained. Part II: Evaluation of Coatings with EIS Thursday, May 25, 2006 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (ET) This course addresses the use of EIS to measure the quality of aircraft, marine, or industrial maintenance coatings. The electrochemical characteristics of high-performance coatings and their effect on EIS measurement are detailed. In addition, methods to stress the coatings while making periodic EIS measurements are described. The assessment of both barrier properties and adhesion of coatings is addressed. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: * Review the basics of electrochemistry * Discuss the basics of EIS * Explain the electrochemical nature of high-performance coatings * Discuss the challenges of making an EIS measurement on a high-impedance coating * Describe several protocols for testing coatings by using EIS in a program that stresses the coating to failure WHO SHOULD ATTEND: R & D, quality control, and technology personnel responsible for improving or quantifying the quality of aircraft, marine, and industrial maintenance coatings will benefit from these sessions. EIS is currently employed by suppliers, formulators, and end users. COURSE INSTRUCTORS: Pete Peterson is the sales and marketing manager at Gamry Instruments, Warminster, PA. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Georgia Organization The President of the University of Georgia (as of 2007, Michael F. Adams) is the head administrator and is appointed and overseen by the Georgia Board of Regents. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina
• • . Dr. Peterson held a post-doctoral appointment at the Chemistry Department at Tulane University History Founding/early history The University dates from 1834 as the Medical College of Louisiana.<ref name="facts" /> With the addition of a law department, it became The University of Louisiana in New Orleans. He served as an analytical chemist at AMAX AMAX American Metals Climax Nickel Refining Company before joining the scientific instrumentation industry, where he has spent most of his career. Bob Rodgers is a senior electrochemist at Gamry Instruments. Dr. Rodgers received the B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Chemistry from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Clarkson University. Following a post-doc at Cal Tech, he spent several years teaching Chemistry and Electrochemistry at Michigan State University Michigan State University, at East Lansing; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1855. It opened in 1857 as Michigan Agricultural College, the first state agricultural college. and Lehigh University. He then joined the electrochemical instrumentation industry and has spent the last 25 years understanding and improving EIS measurement.
