in 8-man football is getting better.

Faith Baptist, producing clutch plays in bunches, overcame a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Grace Brethren 27-24 and win the Southern Section 8-man large-division championship on Saturday at Faith Baptist.

 - including a section title each - for these Heritage League rivals, who were as closely matched this time as they have been throughout their brief, but stirring series history.

How close?

How about Ramsey Zahr's 28-yard pass to Johnny Case on 4th-and-5 shortly after the Contenders (11-1) started their game-winning drive on their own 15 with 2:27 remaining?

On maybe the closest and perhaps biggest play of the game, Faith Baptist's diving Areg Ohanian barely deflecting Chris Owens' fourth-and-10 pass to a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  Larsen. It was enough to deny Larsen end-zone possession on a play that would have given Grace Brethren a 30-21 lead.

``We both make ourselves better,'' Faith Baptist coach Greg Weiss said of the rivalry, which produced a 58-26 Grace Brethren victory when these teams met earlier this season.

``It could have gone either way,'' said Grace Brethren coach Dennis Stephenson, whose Lancers drove to a touchdown on their first possession, overcame a 14-13 Faith Baptist halftime lead and took a 24-14 lead late in the third quarter.

Led by running back R.J. Blackwell (two touchdowns and a game-high 156 yards rushing) and getting strong defensive play from McClain, Chase Kroll and Nick Foy (a team-high 11 tackles), Grace Brethren could have led by more but for penalties that wiped out two touchdowns.

McClain's field goal partially made up for Blackwell's canceled 5-yard, third-quarter scoring run. But the Lancers never got anything out of Blackwell's flagged 41-yard touchdown pass from McClain on a fourth-quarter fake-punt play, and that kept the Contenders close enough to make their closing charge.

They prevailed thanks the passing of Zahr (11 of 19 for 180 yards), the all-around play of Case (165 rushing/receiving yards) and strong defense by Tim D'Antonio, Eddie Gonzalez, Caleb Sturm and Brown, who backed up his dramatic goal-line reception with a game-high 13 tackles and a key pass deflection deflection /de·flec·tion/ (de-flek´shun) deviation or movement from a straight line or given course, such as from the baseline in electrocardiography.

But it was Brown's leaping catch at the 1, despite excellent coverage by the Lancers' Foy, that really electrified the Faith Baptist fans in a standing-room-only crowd and underscored how close this game was:
