 EIGHT NEW PRODUCTS TESTED BY DATAFOCUS RECEIVE POSIX CERTIFICATIONS
 FAIRFAX, Va., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- DataFocus, Incorporated, announced today that their POSIX laboratory successfully tested eight new hardware platforms. These previously untested platforms, from four separate vendors, were all found to be POSIX compliant.
 DataFocus is an accredited POSIX testing laboratory through the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP), and is qualified to run the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) POSIX Conformance Test Suite (PCTS). The PCTS is a computer program that, when run on a computer system, measures the system's compliance with the POSIX standard. A compliant system can then be certified through the NIST Computer Systems Laboratory (CSL). For certification, NIST/CSL requires that the testing be conducted and the test results submitted by an accredited laboratory.
 DataFocus announced the following certifications were granted during May 1992.
 1. Intergraph Corporation's 6400 Series Workstation, Model 6450, using Intergraph's CLIX, Version 06.02.01, Release 3.1.
 2. Pyramid Technology Corporation's MIServer, Model MIS-2T, using Pyramid's OSx, Version 5.1a-92a023, Release 0422s.
 3. Pyramid Technology Corporation's MIServer, Model MIS-4T, using Pyramid's OSx, Version 5.1a, Release 0318t.
 4. AGI Computer Incorporated's AGI, Model 486/33, using ESIX/Everex Systems, Incorporated's ESIX System V, Version 4, Release 4.
 5. ESIX/Everex Systems' Everex, Model 300s 386/33, using ESIX/Everex Systems, Incorporated's ESIX System V, Version 4, Release 4.
 6. CONVEX Computer Corporation's C38, Model C3810, using CONVEX's ConvexOS, Version 10.1, Release C3800 Series.
 7. CONVEX Computer Corporation's C2, Model C220, using CONVEX's ConvexOS, Version 10.1, Release C200 Series. using CONVEX's ConvexOS, Version 10.1, Release C3800 Series.
 8. CONVEX Computer Corporation's C34, Model C3440, using CONVEX's ConvexOS, Version 10.1, Release C3400 Series.
 POSIX
 POSIX, the Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments, is the name given to a family of open systems standards. The System Interface member of the POSIX family, commonly called POSIX.1, has been adopted by the federal government as the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 151-1. POSIX.1 is the cornerstone of the Application Portability Profile (APP), which is the open systems environment defined by NIST and used by all federal agencies. POSIX.1 standardized the method by which application programs communicate requests to operating systems for functions such as opening files, reading data, or starting processes.
 According to DataFocus President Pat Higbie, "POSIX (has) a tremendous impact on the computer industry because it is the first true standard of openness, a fact recognized by the federal government in its adoption of POSIX as a FIPS. Certified products provide the assurance that federal agencies need to satisfy the POSIX requirements of their procurements. By the same token, conformance testing and certification give hardware and software manufacturers independent validation of their claims to openness."
 Openness
 Openness refers to the ability to run applications on different kinds of computers. The goal of open systems, through POSIX, is to eliminate the problem of incompatibility. Proprietary systems force users to buy computer hardware and software from certain manufacturers in order to maintain compatibility with the computer systems which they already have. POSIX-based open systems broaden the market for hardware and software manufacturers while fostering healthy competition which benefits users and vendors alike.
 Higbie continued, "POSIX levels the playing field for everyone. With the right migration strategy in place, organizations protect their investment in their current systems and in their employees training while moving toward an open systems environment. Not being tied to any one manufacturer allows these users to take advantage of the increased competition in the open systems arena."
 The UNIX Operating System had long been touted as the answer to achieving open systems. But Jim Hegerty, the laboratory director of DataFocus, pointed out that "people seem to forget that UNIX is proprietary and any implementation based on UNIX is proprietary. This explains the great popularity of POSIX. POSIX is an interface, not an implementation. As an interface, POSIX provides source code level portability, the most practical and flexible method of software portability across heterogeneous systems. The distinction between implementation and interface also means that any architecture based on any operating system, UNIX and non-UNIX alike, can achieve openness through a POSIX interface."
 Engineers at DataFocus have already proven that POSIX works well with a non-UNIX operating system. Under contract to Unisys, DataFocus developed a POSIX interface to CTOS, a proprietary, message-based operating system for Unisys workstations that supports a client-server architecture. In 1991, CTOS/POSIX was the key to Unisys's winning an $18.6 million contract from the U.S. Army to upgrade 2,600 Tactical Combat Service Support Systems (TACCS). TACCS is a ruggedized microcomputer based on the CTOS workstation for use on the battlefield.
 DataFocus
 DataFocus, Incorporated, which is located in the Washington area, was founded in 1983 to provide consulting and training services in database design, applications development, and project management. DataFocus, now a subsidiary of Convergent Solutions, Incorporated (NASDAQ: CSOL), was introduced to the world of POSIX in 1987. While working for a major systems integrator, DataFocus ported a large database management system to a proprietary operating system. To accomplish the portability required by this project, DataFocus built a POSIX interface to the operating system. Since then, DataFocus has provided its clients with a wide range of POSIX services, including product development, porting, conformance testing, and migration strategy consulting.
