The funding is provided as part of the English Language English language, member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Germanic languages). Spoken by about 470 million people throughout the world, English is the official language of about 45 nations. Acquisition Program. ``It's targeted for students grades 4 to 8. It's meant to be used for students to develop English fluency flu·ent adj. 1. a. Able to express oneself readily and effortlessly: a fluent speaker; fluent in three languages. b. ,'' said Raul Maldonado, the Palmdale School District's director of biliteracy. ``We can provide before- and after-school programs with those funds.'' The Palmdale district will receive $355,900 in this latest round of funding. The district has been getting the state money for seven years. Other districts awarded grants were Eastside Union, $46,300; Keppel Union, $58,000; Lancaster, $148,700; Mojave Unified, $15,200; Southern Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility. Unified, $8,600; Westside Union, $29,700; and Wilsona, $39,400. The $701,800 in funding was part of $55.5 million awarded statewide to 625 school districts and county offices of education. ``One in four California students is learning the English language and the achievement gap between them and our highest-scoring students is unacceptable,'' state schools Superintendent economic one, because it threatens the future of our students and the economic health and security of California.
