EGGERTH SETS THE TONE FOR 14-1 QUARTZ HILL.

Byline: SEAN CEGLINSKY Staff Writer

Brooks Eggerth's impact has been huge for Quartz Hill High's boys' volleyball team, which is on the verge of an unbeaten Golden League season.

The junior setter averages 35 assists per game for the Rebels (14-1 overall, 11-0 Golden), who can finish off their first perfect league run in six years with a victory Friday at Antelope Valley.

``The thing about Brooks is that he's extremely intelligent. He doesn't make dumb decisions,'' Quartz Hill coach Justin Harris said. ``He has great mechanics. He puts the ball where it needs to be.

``Without Brooks, jeez ... I don't know what we'd do. He's very consistent. We know what to expect from him.''

Eggerth had 55 assists for in a five-game loss to Canyon in the Rebels' season opener and had at least 23 in every match of a 14-match winning streak that has followed.

``Brooks keeps everyone involved,'' Quartz Hill junior Pat Studdert said. ``The offense runs through him. He's important. We need him out there.''

The Southern Section next week will announce the Div. II playoff pairings, and sixth-ranked Quartz Hill is seeking a favorable draw. The Rebels have qualified for the postseason in five of the past six years but haven't fared so well, losing in the first round each time. Eggerth and Co. hope to turn things around.

``We have big goals this year,'' he said.

``We have some tough games ahead of us in the playoffs,'' Harris said. ``We're setting realistic goals, though. We're not going to set any that are unattainable. We feel like we can make it to the quarterfinals. We're ready.''
