New ECL-certified benchmark scores for the IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  PowerPC 440GP embedded processor A CPU chip used in a system other than a general purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. In out-of-the-box tests using the Green Hills Software Multi 3.6.1 compiler, the new 500-MHz 440GP scores show an improvement of as much as 17 percent compared with IBM's prior certified scores for this device. The results demonstrate an improvement in compiler capability effecting a more efficient use of the processor's architecture.

EEMBC is also publishing ECL-certified scores for the IBM PowerPC 405GPr embedded processor, which too was certified using the Green Hills Software compiler.

"Clearly, our customers see value in these benchmarks and use them to make design decisions," said Lisa Su, director of PowerPC and emerging products, IBM Microelectronics. "We are pleased with results of this latest benchmark and the scores for the IBM 440GP PowerPC. In addition to our standard products and ASICs, with our recent launch of PowerPC licensing and support initiatives, more customers can now leverage PowerPC performance advantages in their own product designs."

Manufactured in IBM's advanced 0.18-micron CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  SA-27e copper process technology, the IBM PowerPC 440GP combines the PowerPC 440 core with a high-bandwidth on-chip CoreConnect bus that provides separate read and write data busses to deliver 4.2 GB/s of on-chip peak bandwidth. The core's large data cache (32 KB) and instruction cache (32 KB) are 64-way set-associative, with versatile configurations to enhance performance tuning.

"As a founding member of EEMBC, IBM continues to support this consortium in many ways, and publishing scores for both its PowerPC 405GPr and 440GP processors is one of those ways," said EEMBC President Markus Levy. "IBM also supports EEMBC by chairing the Office Automation subcommittee, helping to set new standards for measuring processor performance in applications that include multifunction printers and scanners."

The IBM PowerPC 405GPr embedded processor is a pin-compatible upgrade to the 405GP. Based on IBM's 0.18-micron SA-27e copper process technology, the 405GPr offers speeds of 266, 333, and 400 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ; a larger data cache than the 405GP; and typical power dissipation of 1.3 watts for the 333-MHz processor.

About EEMBC

EEMBC, the Embedded Microprocessor Benchmark Consortium, develops and certifies real-world benchmarks and benchmark scores to help designers select the right embedded processors for their systems. Every processor submitted for EEMBC(R) benchmarking is tested for parameters representing different workloads and capabilities in communications, networking, consumer, office automation, automotive/industrial, embedded Java, and microcontroller-related applications. With members including leading semiconductor, intellectual property, and compiler companies, EEMBC establishes benchmark standards and provides certified benchmarking results through the EEMBC Certification Labs (ECL (Emitter-Coupled Logic) A digital circuit composed of bipolar transistors in which the emitter ends are wired together. ECL gates switch faster than TTL gates, but consume more power. See TTL, I2L and bipolar.
