Byline: Daily News

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - An electronics engineer with the Global Hawk flight test program was selected for a national award for his contributions in engineering and science.

Rodgerick Newhouse, an electronics engineer with the 452nd Flight Test Squadron, was chosen as the most promising engineer in government for 2003 by the Black Engineer of the Year Awards Selection Panel.

``From the get-go he has been an asset to this program,'' said Lt. Michael Guidry, the 452nd's commander. ``He has brought a much-needed expertise to this reconnaissance platform and is deserving de·serv·ing

Newhouse said the award is an honor, but sobering so·ber

``It's not every day that someone tells you that you are the most promising engineer in the entire federal government,'' Newhouse said.

The 28-year-old Newhouse arrived at Edwards in February, after working with the National Reconnaissance Office Noun 1.  when I was just 14 years old,'' Newhouse said. ``So getting the opportunity to work on Global Hawk is for me like being given the chance to play basketball with Michael Jordan This article is about the former basketball player. For other uses, see Michael Jordan (disambiguation).

. Having the opportunity to contribute to the program at such an early stage where I can make such a large impact is very exciting.''

He gives much of the credit for his success to people like his family, friends, teachers, mentors and supervisors who pushed him to try a little harder than necessary and allowed him to reach a little further.

``Without these people believing in me and giving me the opportunities to discover how good I could become, I know I would never have made it nearly as far as I have,'' said Newhouse. ``I appreciate everything that each of them has done for me.''

Newhouse also appreciates the meaning of the award from both the engineer perspective and as an African-American.

``As an engineer, this is a tremendous award, largely because I've worked alongside some absolutely phenomenal engineers from all branches of government, and proudly accept the award in their name,'' Newhouse said. ``As an African-American, I realize that any success comes along with a responsibility to help others as I have been helped along the way. Now it's my turn to try to help all those who might follow in my footsteps.''

His advice to someone who wants to be an engineer includes doing what you love, doing things that are hard, doing the best even when no one is noticing, not being afraid to ask for help and never giving up.

Newhouse will attend the 17th annual award celebration Feb. 15 in Baltimore, Md.
