EDWARD NEY AND JAMES ESKRIDGE ELECTED TO MATTEL BOARD

 LOS ANGELES, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Edward N. Ney and James A. Eskridge have been elected to the board of directors of Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT), John W. Amerman, Mattel's chairman and chief executive officer, announced today. The two additions increase the size of the Mattel board from nine members to 11.
 Currently chairman of the board of advisors of the public relations firm Burson Marsteller, Ney served as U.S. Ambassador to Canada from 1989 to 1992, during which time he was very involved in efforts to expand the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement to become the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
 Prior to his diplomatic service, Ney was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Young & Rubicam Inc., a company that he first joined as an account executive in 1951. He is currently a member of the board of directors of American Barrick, Fortune Bank, and The Horsham Corp., and previously served on the boards of Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette, PaineWebber, and Warner Communications, in addition to Young & Rubicam.
 Born in St. Paul, Minn., Ney received a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1947. He is a trustee of Amherst College, and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree there in 1991.
 Eskridge is executive vice president, chief financial and administrative officer for Mattel Inc. He joined Mattel in January 1989 from Cooper Communities Inc., a privately owned real estate development company, where he was executive vice president.
 Eskridge served the first 13 years of his career in the finance department of General Motors before moving to General Mills in 1982, where he was controller for the company's toy group, and later vice president and chief financial officer for the company's non-food group. He also serves on the board of Vestar Inc.
 Born in San Diego, Eskridge received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California at Riverside in 1968, and was a Baker Scholar at Harvard School of Business where he received an M.B.A. in 1975.
