NOW: At 29, Kaplan is an even savvier-beyond-his-years wonder boy.

A Harvard grad, he directs the Ben Kaplan Institute for Educational Opportunity and has authored 12 books and CDs, including "How to Go to College Almost for Free" (HarperCollins Publishers, 2002). It has sold a cool 250,000 copies.

Now living in Gleneden Beach, he writes a weekly column that appears Thursdays in The Oregonian's Living Section called "Scholars & Dollars." (See www.scholarshipcoach. com). And, oh yes, did we mention his part ownership in a Thai restaurant?

"I don't really have a clear separation between work and the rest of my life," says Kaplan, who's single, although he says his mother is putting on the pressure. "I have this checklist of cool things I want to do in my life and I've done a lot."

So, is there anything Kaplan has set off to do that he hasn't done? Well, when he graduated he told The Register-Guard he hoped to become a senator and, ultimately, the president.

For the moment, he's less interested in running for office than making changes in other ways. "I'm an educational activist," Kaplan says. "A consumer advocate for families in the arena of education."

But don't cross president off the list just yet.
