EDUCATION POWER TRIO MAKES PITCH TO BUSH.

WASHINGTON - Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002. , Los Angeles schools The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  Superintendent Roy Romer Roy R. Romer (born October 31, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas, United States) was the 39th governor of Colorado and served as the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District from 2001 to 2006.  and school board President Genethia Hayes met with President Bush on Wednesday to lobby for more education funds.

The trio are in the capital to speak with federal officials about education. Riordan also plans to lobby for transportation and sanitation issues.

After the three met with Bush for about 20 minutes at the White House, they had an hourlong discussion with the president's domestic policy adviser, Margaret La Montagne

, Romer said.

``The conversation was a good one with the president,'' Romer said. ``We talked about testing. We already do annual testing. It's a good idea - he's advocating it nationally. We're on the same page there.''

Added Riordan: ``This is a guy who is really on top of all the educational issues.

``But we know that, under his budget and tax cut, there's not going to be as much (federal) money to spread around. We're going to have to prioritize.''

Riordan, Romer and Hayes also met briefly with first lady Laura Bush, whose spokeswoman, Noelia Rodriguez, used to work for Riordan.

Today they plan to meet with lawmakers including Sens. Dianne Feinstein Dianne Goldman Berman Feinstein (born June 22, 1933) is the senior U.S. Senator from California, having held office as a senator since 1992. She is a member of the Democratic Party. , D-Calif., and Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., and Reps. John Boehner, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, and Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita.

They plan to fly back tonight. Romer will travel to New York City New York City: see New York, city.
