Top honorees participate in a two-day event and awards banquet.

High schools invited to join 'Poetry Out Loud' initiative

The Oregon Arts Commission, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)

 to participate in "Poetry Out Loud," a national initiative that encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

Participating high schools will organize Poetry Out Loud recitation rec·i·ta·tion

a. The act of reciting memorized materials in a public performance.

b. The material so presented.

a. Oral delivery of prepared lessons by a pupil.

 contests late this fall and winter. Winners from each high school will be eligible to participate in a statewide competition March 10, 2007, in Salem.

The winner of the statewide competition will receive $200 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Finals.

The state winner's school will receive a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books for the school library. A runner-up will receive $100, plus $200 for the school library.

The National Endowment for the Arts will award a total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends at the national finals, with at least a $20,000 college scholarship for the Poetry Out Loud champion.

Approximately 20 high schools in Oregon will be selected to participate in the program by submitting a brief application to the Oregon Arts Commission.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Nov. 1.

Dog Tale Time event allows children to read to canines

Children can build skills and read aloud to supportive listeners - dogs - at Dog Tale Time, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the downtown Eugene Public Library.

Students have until Nov. 3 to sign up for ACT exam

The registration deadline is Nov. 3 for the Dec. 9 ACT college admission exam. The late registration deadline is Nov. 16, which requires an additional $19 fee.

. The basic exam includes four parts: English, reading, mathematics and science; an optional writing test is also available.

The basic exam takes three hours to complete. The registration fee is $29, plus $14 for the writing test.

Scarecrows made Sunday can be entered in the contest for free.

Nature guide Tom Bettman will provide inspiration and know-how for creative pumpkin carving.

Pants, shirts, straw and pumpkins will be provided. Participants need to bring other decorations, as well as knives and spoons.

The fee is $5 per pumpkin or scarecrow. To register, call 747-1504.
