School librarian honored

Molly Hansbrough, librarian at Adams and Hillside elementary schools Hillside Elementary School is a now-closed public elementary school located in the hills section of Berkeley, California. It sits on the block bounded by Le Roy Avenue, Buena Vista Way and La Loma Avenue. Hillside is registered as a local historic landmark.  and Spencer Butte Spencer Butte is a prominent landmark in Lane County, Oregon, United States, south of Eugene. The peak has an elevation of 2055 feet[1] (626 m). Spencer Butte is accessible from Spencer Butte Park and has several hiking trails to the summit.  Middle School, has been named Oregon 2005 District Teacher-Librarian of the Year by the

Oregon Educational Media Association, the professional group for school librarians and media specialists throughout the state. She was chosen from a record number of highly qualified candidates who were nominated by their school principals.

 the association, Hansbrough stood out for the depth and breadth of her school library programs. She incorporates reading promotion, research skills instruction, technology use and collaboration with classroom teachers while running exemplary school libraries.

This is the highest award given by the group, which each year selects one elementary, one secondary and one district teacher-librarian, as well as an administrator of the year. Hansbrough was honored at a banquet Oct. 14 at Eagle Crest Resort in Redmond.

Territorial recycling lauded

The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  received Merit Level Green Certification for its recycling efforts, one of just two in Lane County - the other being Churchill High School - to share the "merit" status and one of 15 to hold Oregon Green School Certification.

Territorial has stepped up its conservation efforts and continued to educate its students about the importance of the three R's - reduce, reuse reuse - Using code developed for one application program in another application. Traditionally achieved using program libraries. Object-oriented programming offers reusability of code via its techniques of inheritance and genericity.  and recycle - as well as energy and water conservation, said Pete Chism, Lane County waste reduction specialist. The school had to meet specific criteria to qualify for the honor, including providing waste-reduction assistance and education to another school.

Firm salutes bus safety

As part of National School Bus Safety Week, which kicks off today, Laidlaw Education Services will honor its Bethel Bethel, in the Bible

The branch, at 3590 Dove Lane, will host a celebration for its drivers and other employees to acknowledge their outstanding performance and commitment to safely transporting area students over the past year. Local school officials also will be on hand to recognize this achievement.

The branch is celebrating its best and safest year ever, said Teri Mathisen, Bethel branch manager. National School Bus Safety Week aims to highlight that safe transportation of students to and from school is a vital part of the education system.

To encourage safety among young students, the company offers a free coloring book to download from its Web site at www.laidlawschoolbus.com. Illinois-based Laidlaw is North America's largest private contractor of student trans- portation.

Briggs student D.C.-bound

Jazlyn Taylor, a seventh-grader at Briggs Middle School, was selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference The Junior National Young Leaders Conference or JrNYLC is a program for sixth, and seventh grade students. It is held in the fall, spring, and summer in Washington, D.C., with an optional alumni conference in Boston the following year.  next month in Washington, D.C.

The conference, which has the theme "The Legacy of American Leadership," introduces young people to the rich tradition of leadership throughout U.S. history while helping them develop their own leadership skills. Taylor, a student council member, was nominated by teacher Joe Hass.
