Parenting classes begin Oct. 5

 Village Family Resource Center will offer a series of free parenting classes beginning Oct. 5 at Cascade Middle School, 1525 Echo Hollow Road.

"The Parent Project" class topics will include family relationships, discipline, family communication, handling stress, family traditions, alcohol and drug issues and balancing work and family. Classes, aimed at parents of students in grades four through eight, will be held every Tuesday through Nov. 9 from 5:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:45 p.m., and child care will be provided for children ages 3 to 9. Children in grades four through eight will participate in activities during classes.

Branch libraries offer games, craft classes

The Eugene Public Library is offering free youth programs in the next two weeks. Friday is "Teen Game Night" for kids 12 to 18 at the Sheldon Branch Library from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, also at the Sheldon branch, "Skills for Thrills" will teach elementary-school-age children traditional Mexican papermaking pa·per·mak·ing

Volunteers, who will be trained in early October, are asked to give one to two hours per week to work with five to seven students, assisting with various tasks including but not limited to, college searches, college and scholarship applications and general support. Student submissions sought for essay contest

The group Teachers Against Prejudice invites students in grades five through 12 to submit entries in its fifth annual essay contest. High school students may submit essays of 750 words or less on why they do or do not believe that journalistic jour·nal·is·tic
