 auction night scheduled

Willamette Christian School will hold its annual auction on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The theme is "A Willamette Winter Wonderland." The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m., dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and the live auction begins at 7:30 p.m.

Pianist David Nevue David Nevue is a solo piano composer and a pianist. He is the founder of Whisperings: Solo Piano Radio, an online radio station, as well as The Music Biz Academy, an educational web site for independent musicians.  will entertain during an elegant sit-down dinner provided by Chef Ely. Classes have created themed Christmas trees to be auctioned off.

Also up for auction are a variety of items donated by local businesses, as well as a Buick Park Avenue

, professional artwork, a Lincoln Day The Lincoln Day celebration is the primary annual celebration and fundraising event of many state and county organizations of the Republican Party in the United States. It is held annually in February or March depending on the county and often features a well known speaker from the  dinner with Jim Feldkamp Jim Feldkamp is an American conservative politician. A Republican, he was a candidate for the United States House of Representatives in Oregon's 4th congressional district in 2004 and 2006. Both times, Feldkamp was defeated by long-term incumbent Peter DeFazio.  and an Oregon Civil War package.

Study abroad nominations due Dec. 6

The AFS A distributed file system for large, widely dispersed Unix and Windows networks from Transarc Corporation, now part of IBM. It is noted for its ease of administration and expandability and stems from Carnegie-Mellon's Andrew File System.

 Awards for Excellence program will offer more than $250,000 in scholarships for high school students to study abroad.  adviser or principal, but the program encourages students to request the nominations. To qualify, a student must exhibit leadership qualities, service to community and have at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Last year, about 8 percent of the students who applied were selected for the program, which places students in foreign countries for a year, a semester or a summer, beginning summer of 2006 or winter of 2007.

There are more than 120 programs in more than 40 countries within the AFS partner network. Some programs concentrate in language learning, community service, outdoor adventure and the arts, among others.

School celebrates book publication

An event is scheduled at Tsunami Books at 2 p.m. Saturday to help the Eugene Waldorf School celebrate the publication of "Peter & the Fire King." The book, a children's novel, was written and illustrated by Waldorf students with the help of Robin "Granny" Morris and Katie Morris, and published in a softcover first edition of 181 pages. The students, who are now fifth-graders, will perform a choir and recorder song, and Granny Morris will read an excerpt from the novel and sign copies. The books are $15 each. RecycleArt student calendar available

The 2006 RecycleArt calendar, featuring the artwork of local students, will be available beginning Nov. 15, America Recycles Day. The free calendar is available at Lane County schools, waste disposal sites, public libraries, Eugene Water & Electric Board, the Atrium and BRING Recycling. It offers waste reduction tips, facts, event listings, recycling guidelines and a local business directory. Funded in part by Lane County Waste Management, the calendar is a production of BRING's education program. For information, call 746-3023.

Salute to veterans planned by school

Lifegate Christian School will host a "Salute to Veterans" Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the auditorium of Living Hope Church, 2801 W. 18th Ave., Eugene. All area veterans are invited. Master Sgt. Jerry Glesman, just returned from Iraq, will be the master of ceremonies. The program will include music by Phyllis Hamburger and bagpiper Wylie McKinnon. The military speaker will be Brig Brig, town, Switzerland

 astronaut Wendy Lawrence speak at the Lane Education Service District on Nov. 14 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Seating is limited to 130, and teachers will be given first priority.

Lawrence, the 23rd American woman in space, will share her insights about her recent space shuttle space shuttle, reusable U.S. space vehicle. Developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), it consists of a winged orbiter, two solid-rocket boosters, and an external tank.  mission to the International Space Station. Lawrence's mother and stepfather, Anne and Ralph Haynes of Alvadore, are members of the Lane ESD (1) (Electronic Software Distribution) Distributing new software and upgrades via the network rather than individual installations on each machine. See ESL.  Foundation board. Lawrence also will present a science fair medal flown on that mission in honor of the spirit and adventure of Lane County students. The event also will serve as a kickoff for preparations for the Lane County Science Fair, scheduled for Feb. 27 through March 1. The fair is open to students in grades 3 through 8.

ExploraVision program seeks entries

The Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards program is seeking entries in its science competition. Student teams select a current technology and imagine what it might be like in 20 years. More than 200,000 public, private and home-schooled students have participated in the program. Students can win a $10,000 savings bond Savings bond

Teacher workshop to focus on writing

The Lane Education Service District will host a free workshop Wednesday for teachers of grades 3 to 8 on strategies and activities to successfully teach the six traits of effective writing. The workshop is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lane ESD, 1200 Highway 99N in Eugene. To register, call Becky Schmitt at 461-8231.

The Eugene Public Library invites children in grades 1 through 6 to Gimme Games at the downtown library Thursday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The free, drop-in program will feature word and storytelling games, including Apples to Apples Jr., Scrabble Scrabble

Game in which two to four players compete in forming words with lettered wooden tiles on a 225-square board. Words spelled out by letters on the tiles interlock like words in a crossword puzzle. Words are scored by adding up the point values of their letters.

Gaelic performer schedules two shows

Children's Choice Montessori will present two evening appearances by Danny O'Haherty, a Gaelic performer who weaves Irish history, folklore and culture into his music, stories and educational programs for children.

The first, which includes a reception, will be Sunday at the Valley River Inn, 1000 Valley River Way in Eugene, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person.
