State awards six Eugene students for poetry

Six students from the Eugene area have won awards in the Oregon State Youth Poetry Contest, sponsored by the Oregon State Poetry Association.

The winners include Willa Bauman, a home-schooled 10th-grader who attends HomeSource, first place in her category for "Elegy elegy, in Greek and Roman poetry, a poem written in elegiac verse (i.e., couplets consisting of a hexameter line followed by a pentameter line). The form dates back to 7th cent. B.C. in Greece and poets such as Archilochus, Mimnermus, and Tytraeus.  for Fyodor Dostoevsky Noun 1. The middle school is home to the football team the Elks, which has won more conference champs than any other middle school in Tennessee. , an honorable mention in his category for "Like Rain in the Morning"; Hanna Hutcheson, a sophomore at Churchill High School, an honorable mention in her category for "Confusion"; Cienna Jade Simmons, a senior at Pleasant Hill High School, an honorable mention in her category for "Here's Something To Be"; and Blaine Patrick Werner Jr., a home-schooled eighth-grader who attends HomeSource, an honorable mention in his category for "Ode to the Snack Machine."

More than 1,000 student poets from throughout the state competed in four categories based on grade level. All winning poems will be published in the 2007 edition of "Cascadia: The Oregon Student Poetry Anthology."

Two Cottage Grove

students honored at event

Two Cottage Grove High School Cottage Grove High School is a public high school located in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It has a newer school building, opened in 2003 to replace the old high school building that was built in 1939 and held its first classes in 1940.  students were honored at the 58th annual Pacific Northwest District Key Club convention held earlier this month.

Senior Shawna Harper was named outstanding secretary among the 285 club secretaries in the district, and freshman Daniel Zajic was named the winner of the Malcolm Lewis Award, which is presented to an outstanding member based on their positive contributions.
