Spencer Butte student wins vocabulary contest

She will join the top winners from all 50 states to battle for the national title and $50,000 in college scholarships at the 2007 National Championship in Orlando, Fla., May 14-15.

In contrast to a spelling bee, the National Word Power Challenge tests students' understanding of what words mean.

Bennett, whose favorite word is eleemosynary eleemosynary (eh-luh-moss-uh-nary) adj. charitable, as applied to a purpose or institution.

More than 2 million students have participated in the Word Power Challenge, an in-school skill building program. Top grade level winners advanced to the state competition, and state champions and teacher escorts receive an all-expense-paid trip to the national championship.

She is one of 250 students from a field of 2,100 who were chosen for demonstrating academic excellence and school and community leadership. She will receive at least a $10,000 scholarship and will travel to Atlanta this month to compete with other finalists for two levels of awards.

Fifty of the finalists will earn national four-year college scholarships of $20,000, and 200 students will earn regional four-year college scholarships of $10,000.

Kiwanis club names March students of month
