Churchill student's poem wins honorable mention

Hanna Hutcheson of Churchill High School has won an honorable mention in the 2007 Oregon State Youth Poetry Contest for her poem "Confusion."

Springfield student group earns achievement award

 will receive a Student Achievement Award by the UO College of Education Alumni Association An alumni association is an association of graduates (alumni) or, more broadly, of former students. In the United Kingdom and the United States, alumni of universities, colleges, schools (especially independent schools), fraternities, and sororities often form groups with alumni  on Wednesday for the anti-harassment and discrimination campaign it developed called `Use Another Word.'

The Springfield student group designed the campaign, which included a poster, a pledge and presentation of the campaign `Use Another Word' to the high school community. The effort will be highlighted in a national magazine called Rethinking Schools, a nonprofit, independent publisher of educational materials with an emphasis on issues of equity and social justice.

The campaign was designed to introduce greater understanding of different lifestyles, interests, cultures and language backgrounds within Springfield High School and within the surrounding community.

Springfield students also are speaking to middle and alternative schools in their district to present the campaign, and they are producing a video in which students from diverse groups talk about how they have experienced harassment Ask a Lawyer

Thurston student's essay wins nationwide contest

Jordan Boehm of Thurston High School won first place for the state of Oregon in a nationwide essay contest sponsored by Entrepreneurship Week USA 2007. His winning essay was on Gert Boyle, founder of Columbia Sportswear Columbia Sportswear Company NASDAQ: COLM is a United States company that manufactures and distributes outerwear and sportswear. Founded in 1938 by the late Paul Lamfrom, father of present chairperson Gert Boyle, the company is headquartered in Portland, Oregon.  in Portland.

Middle-schooler qualifies for state geographic bee

Shyam Das-Toke, a sixth-grader who attends Roosevelt Middle School, has been selected as a semifinalist to compete in the 2007 Oregon Geographic Bee.

Qualifying bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students to determine each school's winner. School-level winners then took a qualifying test to submit to the National Geographic Society National Geographic Society

U.S. scientific society founded in 1888 in Washington, D.C., by a small group of eminent explorers and scientists “for the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.
. The society then invited students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The bee will be held in Monmouth on Friday. The state winner will receive $100 and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent Oregon in the national finals May 22.

Shasta student to attend leadership forum in D.C.

Ginny Wobbe, a seventh-grader who attends Shasta Middle School in Eugene, has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum.

Wobbe will join a select group of students in Washington, D.C., this week to earn high school credit while studying leadership and exploring some of the country's most prominent monuments and institutions.

She was honored for outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

The program, founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, aims to foster world citizenship.

Sheldon, North Eugene students win ACT-SO ACT-SO Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics  gold

 senior Yasha Stubbs and North Eugene High School North Eugene High School is a public high school of about 1,200 students in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It is located at 200 Silver Lane near the Santa Clara area of Eugene.[1] North Eugene's mascot is the Highlander.  junior Alicia Harley earned gold medals in this year's Afro-American Cultural Technological and Scientific Olympics, held March 17 at the Hult Center.

Stubbs won her medal for contemporary vocal music, and Harley won hers for photography.

Both will compete in the national ACT-SO championships in Detroit, Mich., this summer.

Stubbs also earned a silver medal in classical vocal music.

Other silver winners included Macque Linder of North Eugene High in poetry; Christina Stubbs of Willamette High in vocal contemporary music; Dion Brown of North Eugene High in drawing; and Takana Thomas of North Eugene High in painting.

The event, sponsored by the Eugene-Springfield chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), organization composed mainly of American blacks, but with many white members, whose goal is the end of racial discrimination and segregation. , recognized outstanding efforts by local African-American students in 10 categories.
