The winners of the Springfield Public Library's Children's Book Week Bookmark Contest will be honored by Mayor Sid Leiken at tonight's City Council meeting.

The winners are: Bradach Peeves, kindergarten, Yujin Gakuen Alternative Elementary; Liam Frans, first grade, Maple Elementary; Hilary Smith, second grade, home-schooled; Anika Waldorf and Lacey Bird, third grade, Brattain Elementary; David Wilson David Wilson may refer to:

  • David Wilson (sportsman) (born 1967), Australian rugby union footballer and cricketer
  • David Wilson (swimmer), Australian swimmer
, fourth grade, Centennial Elementary; Nicholas Kyle and Rosa Garcia, fifth grade, Brattain; and in the middle school division, Krystina Lightheart, Agnes Stuart Middle School, and Megan Faber, Pleasant Hill Middle School.

This was the contest's 26th year. Children in grades kindergarten through 8 are asked to design a bookmark about books, reading or libraries; this year's theme was "More Books, Please!" The winning bookmarks will be professionally printed for library users.

Gilham students' travel

to school is rewarded

Gilham Elementary School elementary school: see school.  students amassed more than 5,600 "alternative travel" tickets by walking, biking, carpooling or riding a bus to school during the month of October. The campaign kicked off on Oct. 4, which was International Walk to School Day. In all, students made 49 percent of their trips to school through means other than non-carpool driving.

The campaign was a cooperative project of Gilham and the Commuter Solutions' Smart Ways to School Program, which provides free services to help students walk, bike, carpool car·pool
