EDO to Upgrade B-1B Bomber Defenses.

: EDO Edo: see Tokyo, Japan. ) has received multi-year awards for upgrades and maintenance to the AN/ALQ-161A defensive suite on the B-1B Lancer. The awards total $16 million and are expected to be completed by December 2008.

The contract calls for EDO to upgrade the advanced Digital Radar Frequency Memory (DRFM DRFM Digital RF (Radio Frequency) Modulator

) technique generator, a key component of the defensive suite. Its function is to store threatening signals and then reproduce them in a manner that deceives enemy radars.

"The AN/ALQ-161A defensive avionics suite is one of the most comprehensive electronic counter-measure packages ever built," said James M. Smith, EDO's chief executive officer. "While the original engineering concepts are sound, there are many benefits to be gained by upgrading hardware and software that was developed in the 1980s. We expect this work to yield dramatic improvements in system performance."

For more than 60 years, EDO has been researching techniques to improve jamming performance, both under government contract and with internal R&D funds. Based on this research, the company has built leading positions in a number of military applications based on jamming technology as well as jamming counter-measures against a wide variety of threats.
